Premier League - Fulop makes Man City switch

Reuters - Wed, 28 Apr 12:23:00 2010

Manchester City have signed up Hungarian international Marton Fulop on loan from Premier League rivals Sunderland to resolve a goalkeeping crisis threatening their bid for a Champions League qualifying place.

Martin Fulop, Sunderland - 0

The 26-year-old joined up with his new, short-term team-mates at training on Wednesday after the deal was finalised.

Ireland international Shay Given, the club's regular goalkeeper, was ruled out for the season after dislocating his shoulder in a 0-0 draw at Arsenal at the weekend.

The club's reserve keeper Stuart Taylor is recovering from knee surgery which left only 23-year-old Gunnar Nielsen, who stood in on Saturday as the first player from the Faroe Islands to appear in the Premier League.

City also have Joe Hart on loan to Birmingham City but said they had failed to reach an agreement to recall him after talks on Tuesday.

"I got the call on Tuesday from City and I was more than happy to come and help the club," Fulop told City's official website.

"It's fantastic to be here at such a time. It came out of the blue but I'm delighted to try to help City achieve their goal.

"I'm ready to play, if I'm selected. I came here to do a job and I'm confident that I can do that. I feel good, and we need a win to get that fourth-place spot, which is so important for the club.

Fulop is used to playing on loan - having had stints at Chesterfield, Coventry and Sunderland while on Tottenham Hotspur's books and then joining Leicester and Stoke from Sunderland.

The Hungarian is expected to play against Aston Villa at home on Saturday. City have three games remaining and are sixth in the league, a point behind fourth-placed Tottenham and Villa and one ahead of Liverpool.

  1. The fa are a joke, Everton played the first half of the season with 11 first choice players out and never complained man @#$% get 1 out and start begging to the fa what a bunch of foreign c---s

  2. Calm down people. The FA is, was always and always will be a bunch of jokers. There's a lot more @#$% to worry about than City signing an "emergency" keeper. Does this confirm that City are now favored by the FA? Like certain other teams seem to be.

From Peter, on Thu 29 Apr 13:06
  3. Gareth # 20, villa had to get an emergency keeper otherwise an outfield player would have had to go in goal, man city have a good goalkeeper that can play, this just makes absolutely no sense.that man city reserve keeper needs to swallow his pride and rip up his contract and go somewhere that will respect him.

  4. i kinda feel sorry for nielson. there he is playing for the reserves all season waiting for the opportunity, it comes around and city get a keeper in for the rest of the season. i am a city fan and this is a joke. nielson is a full international for gods sake i'm sure chelsea had a similar case a few seasons ago when cech and cudicini were both out with long term injuries and they got refused dispensation to sign a keeper. at the end of the day you have an opportunity in summer and january to sign players. that should be it.

  5. Hey you guys - Marton is a good keeper !

  6. As a Manchester City fan, i have to agree with the majority of what i have read on here. I can not understand how City have got away with asking to loan a keeper when they have them on there books. In a way i am torn between City finishing fourth and the other teams we have around us to play. I dont think we deserve to finish fourth anyway, we have had the chances all season to make that our own spot, and to be honest after this compounded by the FA s lack of consistance in making decisions, I hope we dont. Its not a good day for us, if we finish fourth i think it will be classed as default, we should have carried on with what we have got and hoped and played better than those around us against those around us. So I have to say it is not a good decision by the FA, cant attack City for asking, although i dont agree they should have, and i hope we do not get fourth place. And heaven forbid if it comes down to a penalty at either Villa or Spurs and the goaly saves it, and we go on to win. NO NO NO, none of that please.

  7. The FA have shown what a joke they really are. How the @#%£ can a team that has NINE keepers on their books be granted dispensation to sign another one. Its poor administration on their part if they are unable to re-call players or bring them up through the ranks and they should deal with it and pay the consequenses.

  8. I think hull should get 11 players on loan,as dispensation because they don't want to go down, this is @#$%,how can you give a team that treatment, the fa must have share in a oil well somewhere, what happened last time spurs could have got 4th there had to play at west ham with 1/2 a team because of the food bug.the fa told them they had to play it.i think the fa don't like the spurs.

  9. Really hoped that Nielsen would have a chance to prove himself to the squad he looks decent but couldn't show that because he had so little to do against Arsenal.

A dollop of Fulop could be just what we need!

  11. Will the FA give everyteam a dispensation when they get an injured player. MAncity has plenty of $$$, they should have another Keeper on squad.

  12. great confidence shown in their young goalie then

  13. Gareth - your a gent, and that's from a Spurs fan. Citeh ought to be ashamed, I hope Spurs put 6 past him and it ensures MC dont make the CL. Their young Faroes lad did 'em proud last time out, now they've stabbed him in the back. They should have been made to use what they've had on the books !!

From Niggle, on Thu 29 Apr 5:19
  14. Now I'm no Citeh fan but they were within their rights to ask for dispensation from the league just like anyone is. It's then down to the FA to decide if it's legit and on this occassion they have. This was made certain by the same situation with Villa a few years ago when they got Gabor Kiraly in for the remainder of the season. If anyone is at fault it is the FA for allowing the Villa loan which then set a precedence which they couldn't go back on! However, Citeh should be ashamed for 1. Not ensuring a recall clause in the Hart loan and 2. Having plenty of keepers on the books but shattering anyones hopes of progression and confidence by signing a lower teams 3rd choice 'keeper. Shows the love for their players big style, NOT! As for those slagging off Hart for not going back to his parent club and saying rubbish like 'bite the hand that feeds you' etc..... eh? You don't pay his wages Birmingham do. Also, when he was signed I'm pretty sure he'd have been told how he 'figured in their plans' and such like and then they signed Given. Must have been quite demoralising for the young man so who could blame him wanting to play regular football elsewhere. And it's been his performances for that club that will have got him on the plane to SA, not playing at Eastlands, and I think he'll owe the Blues and Alex McLeish a big thanks for that after all they even had a decent (and fully international keeper on their books) player in Maik Taylor but wanted to give the lad a chance and realised that he could do an outstanding job at that level, which is more than Man City did!! Even though I'm an Arsenal fan of 30 years I now want Spurs in that Top 4 and CL for next year, for although I hate them they've built a good squad, supported players through some bad times, play good attractive football and they won't have £250m to spend this summer. Hope Fabio takes Dawson, King and Lennon with young Joe on

  15. I bet the fella from the Faoro Isles is feeling good about his future. When needed they get someone else. BRILLIANT

From Rob, on Thu 29 Apr 3:06
  16. What abject nonsense! Man City have had all the opportunity in the world to strengthen their squad, in time windows that are made available to all and sundry. The fact that their keep is injured (one of the very best, if not the best in my opinion, and that's from a ManU fan), should not make any difference. They CHOSE to allow Hart to go to B'Ham. Like Man U CHOSE to have Welbeck on loan too, when in fact we needed him.
DID ManU ask for him back? Did ManU get preferential treatment when the likes of Fletcher and Carrick are in defence? I don't think so.
This concession to ManCity is hugely unfair, not least of which to Spurs.
The governing bodies should make rules and stick with them, not bend in the wind like bamboo. This is a travesty, in my view, and I hope Spurs get 4th spot - not because it is Man City, not because Tevez went there, not because of any rivalry. It's simply about fairness. This decision is grossly unfair.
It's unfair to Man City who have done a great job of playing entertaining soccer and raising their bar. It's unfair to the fans because if they do get 4th place, everyone will point to this decision as favouritism and this will undermine their achievement. Lastly, it's unfair to Shay Given - he will be embroiled in this nonsense no doubt. That's a Given. But it's sad that he will because the guy is simply outstanding.

  17. All you Man @#$% fans are a joke in saying that Joe Hart is a Judas etc..

You think you have a Given right(get it)to break contracts because you perceive yourself as a big club now. FA is bending over to the money men. Corrupt pile of ****

Will be supporting all other teams vying for top 4 now.

    From S, on Thu 29 Apr 2:47
  18. Fifa and Uefa talk about corruption in football they do not need to look further than the English Football League. Money bags City are allowed special dispensation how much did it cost them? Joe Hart is a Brum player till end of season he would have been a Judas if he had went to City's help after the way they treated him.

From THOMAS, on Thu 29 Apr 2:46
  19. I understand how people would look at this situation, it is laughable but all in all it's City's fault for not putting a re-call clause in the contract (idiots but there you have it) having said that Birmignham have just the 2 games to go against Burnley & Bolton, one thing for sure is they will not be going any higher in the table they are 10pts behind Everton, you'd expect Birmingham to beat relegated Burnley even if they had (no disrespect) George Formby in the nets so that should more or less seal their 9th place birth.

Tell you what though the game has changed, i know how good Joe Hart is and his potential for the future looks exceptionally good, but i'll tell you now Joe Hart did not want to hang around at City when Shay Given arrived, not so long back though if a club had 2 decent keepers you sat their and fought for your place, that's how it was, every decent team wants/needs 2 good players for every position, it's a team game not an individual thing so for me Man City would be better of without the likes of Joe Hart we've had enough of that with Robinho, you either want to play for said club if not sod off.

Where Joe Hart 's futures lies now after this i'd be unsure, can Birmingham afford him ? or was they trying to hold City to ransom over another year loan for next season ? we give him you back now for the 3 games but you let us have him for another season........don't think so, could end up at Arsenal.
