The Montenegro-born Canadian, seeded fifth, has risen from outside the top 150 to 26th since the start of 2011 and should progress further after another impressive performance.

Next up for him is a first-ever clay quarter-final, where he faces France’s fourth seed Gilles Simon, who beat Carlos Berlocq of Argentina 6-2 6-1.

Also through to the quarters on Thursday is South Africa's seventh seed Kevin Anderson, who beat unseeded Romanian Victor Hanescu 6-4 6-2, and second seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain, who downed Portugal’s Frederico Gil 6-1 7-6(5).

In the women's event, unseeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues upset Czech third seed Klara Zakopalova 6-3 7-5 to progress to the semi-finals.

Another non-seed, Kristina Barrois of Germany, beat top-seeded Russian Alisa Kleybanova 6-4 6-2, while Johanna Larsson of Sweden knocked out Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 6-2 7-5
