League One - Advantage Owls in promotion race
Sheffield United came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home to Stevenage but it was not enough to see them reclaim second spot from arch-rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
The Owls had climbed above the Blades in the League One table earlier in the day thanks to a 2-1 victory at Brentford.
At Bramall Lane, goals from Joel Byrom and Scott Laird put the visitors in command before Richard Cresswell and Matt Lowton scored to set up a tense finish.
At Griffin Park, goals from Keith Treacy and Miguel Llera enough to see Wednesday past the Bees, for whom Clayton Donaldson converted a penalty on the hour mark.
The defeat ends Brentford’s hopes of reaching the play-offs.
At the other end of the table, Wycombe Wanderers conceded twice at the death to lose 4-3 at home to Notts County, relegating the Chairboys to League Two.
Playing at home and needing to win to stay in touch with Walsall and Leyton Orient, Wycombe were leading 3-2 in the 89th minute before Dele Adebola equalised for County.
And in the dying seconds winger Alan Judge scored his second of the match to send Wycombe down, keeping County in the hunt for a play-off spot.
Wycombe join Chesterfield, Exeter City and Rochdale in League Two.
A double from Ivorian striker Francois Zoko helped Carlisle keep their play-off hopes alive as the 4-1 scoreline at Brunton Park condemned Exeter to relegation.
Jordan Cook and Liam Noble were also on target for the home side with Liam Sercombe replying for the Grecians, who went down to their ninth successive away defeat.
Champions Charlton Athletic were held to a 2-2 draw by mid-table Preston North End.
MK Dons, already in the play-offs but short of an automatic promotion slot, cemented fourth place with a 2-1 win at bottom club Rochdale. Jay O’Shea and Dean Bowditch were on target for Dons, with Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro pulling one back late on for Dale.
Huddersfield, who had been behind the Dons on goal difference, slipped two points behind to fifth after a 1-1 draw at Walsall, for whom a point was enough to secure their League One status. Lee Novak’s early goal put the Terriers ahead before Florent Cuvelier equalised just after half-time.
Colchester finished their home season on a winning note with a 4-2 home victory over fellow mid-table side Tranmere. Ian Henderson, Tom Eastman, an Ian Goodison own-goal and Freddie Sears scored for the Us, with James Wallis and Lucas Akins on target for Tranmere.
Leyton Orient escaped relegation despite losing 2-1 at Hartlepool, the O’s spared by Wycombe’s collapse. Antony Sweeney put Pools ahead before Jamal Campbell-Ryce equalised. Ryan Noble headed the winner, with Orient seeing two penalty appeals rejected as they tried to level.
Bury rounded off their home campaign with a 0-0 draw against Oldham in a lively Greater Manchester derby.
In other results, Scunthorpe drew 1-1 at home to Bournemouth, both sides well clear of the relegation zone, while Yeovil beat relegated Chesterfield 3-2 to move on to 54 points.

Ha ha you seem to be getting a lot of thumbs down Martyn, perhaps you're not as popular as you thought. There's going to be 38,000 at Hillsborough on Saturday (LEAGUE ONE !),which makes us one of the best supported teams in Europe,if we don't get AP ,there'll be 38,000 in the play offs, figures you can only dream about. We're not selfish we like to throw minnows a few scraps,so enjoy your day on Saturday,it won't last. There are plans to increase capacity by another 10,000,which will give us one of the finest stadiums in the country, you are witnessing the birth of a giant, bye bye.
What are you then a ginger beer?
There you go AOB, shows what you are made of by you latest comment. Sad man, go play with your keyboard because you are not a real fan. Hey pop along to "The Valley" Sat and you can see some silverare being picked up. You are a top class merchant banker. Cokney slang for ******.
You're wasting your breath on me,why don't you go & inflate your wife again.
Afair weather fan wrong again AOB, supported Charlton man and boy. In my DNA,been supporting them 40 years. So hardly weather. Another thing you got wrong. Mind you, you get a lot wrong how can a team thats going to finish below Charlton bee superior, when you look at both teams, they have the same track record. Just Wenesday been around a bit longer. So you only have longevity on your side. Performance wise of the last 30 yrs much the same, so therefore not superior, omly this year where you have trailed in the wake of the better team, CHARLTON ATHLETIC. Finished playing with you because it is like taking candy from a baby. Enjoy your big sweat on Sat, come on the Blades, 2nd best team in Div 1 next to the Champions.
If i was picking an alias I would have chosen one that annoyed you.If Wednesday don't go up Saturday it's not the end of the world, you can hammer me all you like,I'll still support them unlike you fairweather supporters.
Sorry fartyn martyn got better things to do,thought you praised teams when they did well, what's the matter can't you take someone being superior to you?
39mright you are probably AOB, so your comments do not bother me. Comments that say nothing nice about Sheff Wed. Well there is nothing nice to say about them, when you have people like youreslfs spouting how wonderfull Wed are. Truth is Charlton had 4 pts off Wed and won the league by a mile and Wed are not up yet.so truthfull comments are pathetic.Get a life 39mright. Lets hope Wycombe spoil the party next Sat.
At last a human being

martyn - I don't comment on these pages much but I have been reading them for some time. I think you are the most pathetic contributer on yahoo sports pages and if Karen is your wife I feel sorry for her.
Am I bothered? she's probably been infected by you.
Once again AOB you show you ignorance, Karen is a Charlton fan, how i know, she is married to me. No name calling, as its the first time she has decided to comment on your infantile behaviour. I think the way you have reacted you are the 5 yr old. Quick, its nearly bath time, mummys calling you.Trot on, there a good mrchant banker. Get the London slang. PS last time i looked there was no sex offenders playing for Charlton. Better behave with talk like that, as you might be getting a tap on the door, from the police and face the same fate as the Sheff Utd fans that were caught on here.
You can't even get my initials right it's AOAB All Over 'apless Blades
Blah blah blah call yourself a football supporter, all you ever do is call people names,I stopped doing that when I was 5.If you are a football supporter look at the current form table,Wednesday have been top in all 3 categories for 2 months, whereas you,you would rather support a team that has convicted sex offenders & cheats.
Unlike you AOB, i am a true fan. Go to all home matches and a good few away matches. I can also praise other teams when they do well. Where as you are AOB, just sad bitter twisted individual, that gets Wednesday a bad name, by spitting hatred and posion on these boards. The history books will say Charlton champions 2011 / 12. Wednesday poss 2nd, might by play offs up or stayed down.AOB take a leaf out of Phillips book and approach next week with caution because if you dont make it, i am sure you are going to get hammered on here. Once again AOB you snakehead, keep spitting the venom you vile individual. Just a last thing for you AOB,you have very unfortunate initials, any other business. Very apt in you case. Always at the end.
P.S. Henry, when you was rioting you should have stolen an ipad, you can go on the internet with it,we can afford to buy them up here.
Think you should look in the mirror, but you probably haven't got a reflection, what a twisted little troll you are.
Wednesday still have a job to do so lets not get ahead of ourselves. united have made it very hard for us up to the last couple of weeks its wednesdays to lose now. Party on the final whistle hopefully until then stay focused.
