Bayern, to be led by former Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann from the start of next season, are seeking a goalie to serve as back-up to Michael Rensing, who will take over the number one jersey from retiring legendary 'keeper Oliver Kahn.

"Yes, we are conducting talks with Hans-Joerg Butt," said Bayern manager Uli Hoeness.

Butt, who played in the 2002 Champions League final with Bayer Leverkusen when they lost to Zinedine Zidane's wonder-strike for Real Madrid at Hampden Park, has a contract with Portuguese club Benfica until 2009.

The fee is believed to amount to 1.5 million euros.

Butt is keen to find out if he is part of the plans of new Benfica coach Quique Sanchez Flores.
