John Terry gave England the lead in tonight's friendly against the USA and Fabio Capello's side lead 2-0 at Wembley.
Rooney has been used predominantly as a lone striker or wide midfielder for club and country this season, but tonight plays his preferred role as a deep-lying forward, probably behind Dean Ashton.
"I've said to him he's too generous, trying to do too much," said Capello of the man who scored nine times in his first 17 England appearances but has hit the net just five times in 25 games since.
"He needs to focus, to play in the best position for him. He needs to be more selfish."
Capello reverts to a 4-4-2 formation after his unsuccessful experiment with a single striker in the 1-0 defeat to France in March.
Ashton is expected to start on a belated debut, nearly two years after breaking his ankle in training for England ahead of a friendly against Greece.
The West Ham striker hit impressive form late in the season, and scored a memorable overhead kick against Manchester United.
Capello's determination to include Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry and Steven Gerrard in midfield could see the latter shunted out to the dreaded left side, while David Bentley should start ahead of David Beckham on the right.
Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand and tonight's captain John Terry pick themselves in defence, while Capello must choose between United colleagues Wes Brown and Owen Hargreaves at right-back.
David James continues in goal, with Peterborough's Joe Lewis on the bench hoping to become the first player outside the top two divisions to win a full England cap since Wolves' Steve Bull in 1989.
USA captain Landon Donovan wins his 100th cap just two months after LA Galaxy team-mate Beckham did the same for England.
Other familiar faces likely to start for the visitors include Fulham's Clint Dempsey and Carlos Bocanegra, DaMarcus Beasley of Rangers and Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard.
