The 22-year-old, who played through the final weeks of the Premier League season with the problem in his right knee, had surgery on Thursday morning.

A club spokesman said: "This morning's surgery was a complete success and Wheater is expected to be ready to return to pre-season training."

Wheater, a product of the club's Academy, has indicated his desire to stay at Boro despite the club's relegation form the Premier League, although it would be no surprise if potential buyers made a bid during the coming months.

Meanwhile, fellow defender Chris Riggott, who missed the end of the season with an ankle problem, has also had surgery.

The 28-year-old, whose time at the Riverside Stadium has been plagued by injuries, managed only 20 appearances last season.
