Premier League - Yorke released by Sunderland

Eurosport - Thu, 28 May 16:52:00 2009

Trinidad and Tobago international Dwight Yorke has been released by Sunderland, along with six other players.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Sunderland Dwight Yorke - 0

The 37-year-old, who is out of contract at the Stadium of Light, was, as expected, not included when the club released its retained list.

Yorke, who signed for Sunderland from Sydney FC in 2006, barely figured for the Black Cats this season, starting just four league games.

Striker David Connolly, midfielder Arnau Rier and goalkeepers Darren Ward and Nick Colgan were also told they will have to search for pastures new.

Young defenders Peter Hartley and Niall McArdle completed the list of unwanted players.

Defenders Calum Davenport and Tal Ben Haim will return to West Ham United and Manchester City respectively after their loan deals ended.

  2. Come on Tony K! Lucky?! Every team played 38 matches. Every team played each other twice, home and away. With that system, the teams that play the most consistent football will finish in the top of the league. The teams that don't will end up where we (SAFC and NUFC) did. I don't think you can disagree with that. None of the teams at the bottom were playing quality football at the end to say they were unlucky in defeat. I would venture to say the results were as expected in the end.

  4. Tony K - I agree with jack that it is commendable you stick with the Black and White through thick and thin times. I join jack in the slow hand clap.

Now I ask you to give me more credit then the typical "morons" you encounter on these posts. As I stated in my lengthy dialogue, Sunderland did not play to their full potential. They finished with 36 points because they deserved 36 points. My point is that 36 points was enough this year to be called a Top Flight Club.

I can not and will not blame the refs or other players for the blight of my Red and White, because I will not give refs or other players credit for the success of my Red and White. As I am sure you wouldn't blame/credit refs or other players for the results of your beloved Black and White.

  5. Ah Tony you get a slow hand clap from me just for the sheer bravado of it,well done mate,a lot of the Mags have simply smouldered away in the blaze of realisation that their team are @#$%.But hats off to you and Cameron you keep flying that tattered, battered little NUFC flag of yours."Bit of the Dunkirk spirit . . know what I mean?"

  6. Quote Tony K "dont give me this top flight rubbish, you are making the numbers up in that league"

  9. Ha Ha Tony k like your kahunas mate still dissing SAFC despite your team being in the league that dare not speak it's name and Sunderland by definition now being the only big club in the NE of England.
Sirstevejones13 not only do you pollute the boxing threads with your vile drivel but now you come on here doing it to.Educationaly sub-normal people like yourself would not have survived the master race's purges, maybe something you should think about before peddaling your racist tripe on here. The BNP are a cluless bunch of one idea rejects from society who play on the fears of the uneducated.

  10. Shame about Dwight BTW, He was a very good player but getting on a bit now, still a legend in T&Tob

  11. Isnt it a shame that everyone, no matter how stupid, gets to vote. Ever wondered why educated people never vote for the BNP? Is it because you know something they dont? You understand more than people who spend years studying subjects?
Read a book, perhaps about WW2, the nazi's lost, the superior race lost!

  12. Allow me to reflect on the status of Sunderland for a moment ...

The first fact is Sunderland accumulated 36 points this year. There were several occasions when they should have taken more points. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. They didn't play to their full potential and found themselves in a relegation battle. The task was a difficult one on Survival Sunday against Chelsea. But, to their credit, Sunderland played valiantly despite falling 2-3. Was this going to be enough?

This is where the second (some may say most important) fact should be brought to the attention of all those reading this post. The cut off point to remain in the Premier League for the 2009-2010 campaign was established by Hull at 35 points. Therefore, any team with 34 points or less are to be relegated. As I recall from elementary mathematics, 36 is greater than 34. As a result, Sunderland deserve to play in the Premier League next season.

The last piece to this puzzle isn't so much fact as accepted truth . If I were to ask citizens of various countries around the world, "What is another name for the Top Flight of English Football?", I would expect the answer to be some variation of "The English Barclay's Premier League". So, I don't think I would damage my reputation by assuming that "The Premier League" equates to "The Top Flight League"

In closing, the facts previously discussed and the worldwide acceptance of a simple truth lead to one conclusion ...

SUNDERLAND ARE A TOP FLIGHT CLUB!

  15. tony k at least we have a chance of qualifying for Europe via our league position and also by the looks of things alot of money to spend u on the other hand are bleating about having to cut ur wage bill by 650k a week , nowt to spend on players and only the early rounds of the Carling cup to look forward to oh and by the way aldi are doing an offer of two coca cola's for a pound shearer might just be able to afford a can for each of the first team if ur lucky

  17. 1.You'd think they would get a manager b4 releasing players! Brendan normally I would whole heartatley agree with you wise words. But Yorke was never going to get in whatever managers team in the recent past or near future. It's a 25,000 pound a week saving on a player way past his best.

Thanks all the same though Yorkie
