The 37-year-old, who is out of contract at the Stadium of Light, was, as expected, not included when the club released its retained list.

Yorke, who signed for Sunderland from Sydney FC in 2006, barely figured for the Black Cats this season, starting just four league games.

Striker David Connolly, midfielder Arnau Rier and goalkeepers Darren Ward and Nick Colgan were also told they will have to search for pastures new.

Young defenders Peter Hartley and Niall McArdle completed the list of unwanted players.

Defenders Calum Davenport and Tal Ben Haim will return to West Ham United and Manchester City respectively after their loan deals ended.
