Lee backs Shearer to stay

Thu 28 May, 12:43 PM

Former Newcastle United captain Rob Lee believes current owner Mike Ashley must keep Alan Shearer at St James' Park to oversee the club's bid to return to the Barclays Premier League.

Lee was in the stands on Sunday as Newcastle's 16-year spell in the top flight came to an end with a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa as Shearer's eight-game mission to keep the Magpies among the elite ended in failure.

But despite that Lee, who was part of the Newcastle side which won promotion to the Premier League under Kevin Keegan in 1993, insists Shearer is the only man who can ensure they spend just one season in the Championship.

"I certainly think Alan should stay, I think it is the only appointment Mike Ashley can make with the club going down. It reminds me of the situation when I joined in 1992 under Kevin Keegan when we were in the old first division," Lee told PA Sport.

"The club needs rebuilding, it has needed rebuilding for many years. Mike Ashley takes a lot of the blame, but it has been coming for a long time.

"It's disappointing for the club, but in the long term it might be a blessing in disguise, to take one step back to get two steps forward. I hope Alan stays in charge with a long-term contract because it is a long-term thing."

  3. To fans everywhere.
You can have your opinion, you can make your judgements, but the fan or customer,if you like has no power whatsoever.
the fans job is to attend the matches, dig deep in their pockets, hand over bundles of cash, whatever the result.
the club and its infastructure is designed to take as much cash from the fans as is possible, making the few at the club very rich indeed.
the question i would like to ask all fans is "why do you go to a football match".your money is lining their pockets.

  5. OK sr.melvin we get the message, I for one would not like to see him back, put the club hugely into debt and creamed off a few quid for himself. However I would like to see Bobby Lee back in some role at the club, a top midfield man

  6. FAT VULTURE SHEPHERD IS HOVERING AROUND EYEING UP THE CARCASS OF ASHLEY'S NUFC. I'M NOT SAYING THAT SHEPHERD COULDN'T DO A BETTER JOB THAN ASHLEY, BUT DO WE REALLY WANT THIS DISCREDITED MAN BACK AT THE HELM OF OUR CLUB?

LET NOBODY FORGET THIS.. News of the World Exposé

In March 1998, Shepherd and Douglas Hall were the target of a News of the World exposé, led by the “Fake Sheikh” Mazher Mahmood. The pair, believing Mahmood to be a wealthy Arab prince trying to set up a business deal, were caught mocking the club's own supporters for spending extortionate amounts of money on merchandise, calling female supporters “dogs”, and mocking star striker Alan Shearer by calling him the "Mary Poppins of football", all while frequenting a brothel.
