Middlesbrough midfielder Gary O'Neil is backing manager Gareth Southgate to take the club straight back into the Barclays Premier League.
The 26-year-old was devastated to see Boro slip out of the top flight as a result of their 2-1 final day defeat at West Ham.
Fans have since criticised chairman Steve Gibson for not dispensing with Southgate's services, but O'Neil is adamant he is the man for the job.
He said: "He's a fantastic manager, I can't speak too highly of him. He's been fantastic with me.
"He works every hour he can to improve as a manager and do what's right for the football club.
"I know we will be looking to bounce back, and he's definitely the right man to take us back up."

gary o neil is leaving and thats a fact along with the rest of our first team apart from that dozy wheater who wants to stay. but the only thing i can say about our team is let the young players start because they are much better than our first team and i hope tuncay stays but everyone knows that its very unrealistic think about it what would top class captain of turkey be doing playing for championship side middlesbrough???????? but u never know he is a nice player and he is devoted so he might want to help us get back to the pl
sounds like it to me, although lets see what happens when portsmouth n bolton come sniffing !!
Do we assume from Gary O'Neil's cooments that he wishes to stay at Boro and help achieve promotion back to EPL at first attempt. If so I think this would be a tremendous boost to the club and the supporters as his quality and experience is superb.
