Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock has his heart set on an opening-day clash with Newcastle.
The Magpies will be favourites to bounce straight back following their shock relegation from the Premier League but Warnock has warned they will not find the Championship a walk in the park.
"They won't find it easy by any stretch of the imagination," he told the South London Press.
"Newcastle coming down only shocks me in the sense that no way should a club like that get relegated with the fanbase they have got - they have just made so many errors of judgement at every turn.
"It's not funny from inside the club but from the outside it is almost comical. I don't think we fear anybody or that reputations will worry us because we're not that type of team. I don't believe Newcastle will relish playing us.
"Ideally we want them at Selhurst on the first day of the season - I'm sure that would be the televised match."

Apart from Middlesbrough I cannot see WBA or Newcastle struggling in the championship especially if they hold on to their key players. But if they think it is a walk over then they will find life can be tough in what is not the most talented league. The teams who keep the ball on the ground and play football instead of route one and archaic tactics will thrive. Look at Burnely they played it sensibly and passed it around well keeping possession. It worked and they deserved the promotion but are they good enough for the premier, probably not. Not many in the championship are.
GO AWAY WARNOCK WITH YOUR FRIEND BLACKWELL ALL MOUTH BOTH OF YOU
To the likes of humbleman and david w.
Ok, i accept that THIS squad will find it tough in the Championship - but THIS squad won't be playing in the Championship!! Let us see who is brought in before casting all these predictions of doom and gloom huh?
Newcastle will have a real eye-opener playing in The Championship... is wont be easy for them.. the smaller teams will raise their game when playing at St James' Park.... My tip for the top........... Leicester City... they are on their way up.... Newcastle... the opposite direction !!
Wow didn't take long for the established fizzy pop managers to start the mind games did it. NUFC should take that as a compliment. Proves the others are already worried before we start. NUFC have a great crop of youngsters almost ready, playing in a very sucsessfull reserve and acadamy set up. Dont think it will be to much of a concern if most of the first team naff off . Ashley wants to cut the wage bill by 600k a week now he can and not before time.
impactclean, I dont think anyone has a clue. I think the bulk of the squad will be gone before the start of the season whether they want to go or not and most if not all of the fees recieved will be used to pay up their contracts (not a bad reward for failure). The Shearer situation isn't resolved yet so we dont know who will be incharge, it could be an unpopular appointment. Ashley has appologised for his mistakes but that doesn't mean he wont make anymore. If we dont have a lot of money for new players we may have to use the young lads like Ranger, Lua Lua, Carroll etc, not a bad thing.
ps all,
anyone got any idea what team line up is for necastle in championship?who will stay, who will go.?
Warnock has a very valid point, Newcastle may struggle for a year or two, they need to accept the fact that they are a VERY poor team entering a tough league.
All the fans should take note that the next year or so is going to be a long hard slog.
Warnock another pri.ck
heslop, by 'their' mistakes, i meant southampton, norwich etc . . . -
We make take a season to readjust; the squad is a shocker and needs a total overhall but we'll get there. In the meantime, i'm gonna make the most of our time in the Championship and take the opportunity to meet new sets of fans, and visit new grounds. It's my lot, i've accepted it so i will enjoy (for one season i hope, 2 max!).
heslop448,
Not in the slightest - did safc, after ALL THREE of their relegations from the EPL keep on falling . . .don't think so!
Besides, we can learn from their mistakes; we'll be fine, you just worry about all the world class signings coming your way, and how you are gonna accomodate them all in your star-spangled squad.
cameron mate yes the teams that go up nearly always go straight back down but the bit that must frighten u is that the teams that go down just keep on falling ,leeds southampton, charlton, norwich.forest etc

sorry mate i must've sounded like a real mug there.
Of course i know what it's like, was there 16 years ago!
I mean, the standard of football; i mean it can't be that crash hot when invariably the 3 teams that go up nearly always come straight back down don't they?
Comment 15, the vast majority of us took no notice mate so no grudge towards palace from us. A fan for 42 years, well I hope next season brings you some better times.

Hello mate; as aToon boy i am really interested in some 'sensible' views of the Championship.
Can you let me and my cohorts know what it's really like?
More nonsense from Warnock. With the players Warnock has sold and the lack of investment from Mr Orange Newcastle will be too much for Palace. Warnock and Jordan (Mr Orange) are ruining the club I have supported for 42 years. Can't wait to see palace play the magpies but please Warnock shut up and for once stop being a pratt!!
Meant to say I hope Newcastle thrash Palace 6-0.Re comment 10 about Crystal Palace pulling up any trees well Neil Warnock was out of his tree when he made his remarks.
Cameron w, I know mate. I dont mind their fans having a laugh, we've been doing it to them for decades but how do they work out that us being relegated means european football and trophy's galore for them. When we do come back up it's a good possibility it will be them we replace I mean lets face it, how many times over the years have the Mackems ended up with egg on their faces.
Ha, ha they're the deluded one's - they'll only get the scraps the so-called 'big-4' leave - in fact no they won't, they'll only get the scraps of the scraps, after the bigger clubs of Wigan, bolton, blackburn and hull have finished!
For once i agree with Ken a(sswipe), safc will never attract world class players to their Monkwearmouth Monstrosity; just like they'll never attract a 'big-name' world class manager!
John, it was to be expected mate; they've been waiting a generation for their 'moment' - and that's all it will be, a 'moment'.
