Atletico's Coupet bid rejected

Sat 28 Jun, 09:45 PM

Gregory Coupet's move to Atletico Madrid appears to have fallen through after Lyon announced they had rejected a second bid for the goalkeeper. The 35-year-old French international told Les Gones that he would not be playing for them next season before heading to Euro 2008, despite him signing a contract extension last summer which ties him to the club until 2010.

Atletico have since emerged as favourites to sign him, with the president of the Spanish club, Enrique Cerezo, confirming on Friday that they were in negotiations with Lyon for the player.

But the club's director of communications, Olivier Blanc, has announced that the offer made by Atletico was less than they had expected and had therefore been rejected.

"Atletico made a new offer which did not meet our expectations as the conditions set out within it were not reasonable," he told French newspaper L'Equipe.

"This means that for the moment there's no deal and as yet we have not received a new offer for him from Atletico Madrid."

According to reports in L'Equipe Lyon rejected an initial 200,000 euro bid from Atletico for Coupet, and have now turned down an improved offer of 900,000 euros.

The newspaper claims that the French champions are holding out for 1.5million euros for the goalkeeper, despite the fact that Lyon have already signed Hugo Lloris from Nice as a replacement.
