Rafa Out To End Title Wait

Sat 28 Jun, 04:09 PM

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez reckons ending the club's wait for the Premier League title would be the greatest accomplishment of his career.

The Reds have gone 18 years since lifting England's top prize when Kenny Dalglish's side won the old First Division in the 1989-90 season.

Liverpool fans are desperate to win the top-flight title again after seeing their arch-rivals Manchester United dominate domestically since the Premier League's inception in 1992.

Benitez accepts winning the championship is difficult because of the competiton from other clubs, but he believes he can achieve the feat.

"Winning the title would be the biggest achievement of my career," Benitez told the club's official website.

"It's more difficult than in Spain because teams here spend big money.

"We will do our best. The key is not to talk about winning the title but to talk about doing a good job so we can be close, so we can be contenders.

"If we are close I think that we can win the title."

Benitez is currently scouring the transfer market for reinforcements for next season and the Spaniard knows it is vital that he brings in the right type of players to supplement his squad.

"The key is to sign the right players with the right mentality - a winning mentality - competitive players, players who are desperate to come here to win something," added Benitez.

"That is the key for me. We have been analysing a lot of things this summer. For example, we were conceding a lot of goals last season from set-pieces.

"We need to know why because the previous season we only conceded six, but this year it has been 16. We need to know why so we can improve in these areas, but keep the team scoring goals in open play.

"We have been really good in defence for three or four years but we need to improve a little bit if we want to be in contention."

  1. we(liverpool) need winger so i suggest to buy podolski, he's good as a winger, he also can score... we can put babel on left side, he can score also from there... mascherano as holding midfield, gerrard control midfield, torres as hitman upfront, what else do we need to win EPL this season? Come on rafa...

  2. I dont think that comments against rafa can be bad.with the money hes had he delivered great things.the bord of directors are to blame for the short comings weve had in the league, you need to speculate to accumulate....... so yanks get rafa who he wants.
Rafa,s key statement is that he wants players with the right mentality and winning competitive mentality and players that want to play for the club!!!!!
its no good spending big on top stars if they dont pull their weight and dont work for the club/team and just think of their selfs.
Barry is slightly older than i would really prefer. but he more than ticks all the boxes.he will do well in a liverpool shirt he will raise well above the challege that lays before him Mark my words!!!

  5. I also think that Babel should play upfront with Torres.LFC is quite close to win the premiership,I think one good adition is needed .... winger(Silva or Cazorla)and that`s it,at the end could be a dominant season for LFC in premiership.

  6. we dont need another striker play gerrard up front with torres, get another good midfielder, get silva and thats bout all we need, get rid of crouch, 9 mil i think is a good price, we have bout 5 players we dont need, that would get us bout 20 mil, thats silva, and another good player,.. think rafa stop pricing average players as world class ones.. sell sell sell, buy buy buy... come on you mighty reds..

  9. With the current squad I don't think Rafa can challenge Man Utd and Chelsea for the title. Liverpool have to buy big to challenge these 2 clubs because they improve their strenght every season. With Deggen and Donsena coming in ( who the dude are these two - they don't even make a squad in Euro 2008 )there isn't any big names coming in this season. This season is like the last.

  13. i agree with wardster31 we must play our strongest team at all times,, i also like to see babel up front with torres not on the wing

  14. Play your strongest team week in week out Rafa and we might just might have a chance of winning the premiership. Keep changing and we will fall behind very quickly as we did last year.
