On the very last run of Rally Poland, overall second-placed Jari-Matti Latvala only had to complete the Mikolajki super special stage to confirm a one-two victory for Ford behind teammate Mikko Hirvonen.
Disaster struck however when Latvala clipped an oil barrel filled with sand, sending his Focus RS WRC off the line and smashing front first into the barriers.
The Finn furiously tried to reverse out and complete the stage, but with the Ford's suspension and steering system broken it was impossible to achieve. Smoke appeared when the engine suddenly caught fire, but extinguishers were quickly at work.
Latvala and co-driver Miikka Anttila are unhurt but both are very clearly devastated and upset for losing an almost secured second overall position at Rally Poland.
No doubt a serious conversation will be taking place with Ford Team Principal Malcolm Wilson...
