The Loughborough ITC man touched in a new British record time of 7:50.49.

"I was looking to get a quicker time," Davies said. "But I am feeling a bit tired through my training. I have been trying to bring it back stronger but the energy just wasn't there tonight. To get a record always give you a buzz but I wanted to go faster tonight.

"Everyone in distance swimming is going really fast and they have moved the events on massively. My preparation is making sure this is something I will be doing in 2012. It is all geared towards that goal."

Joseph Roebuck (Loughborough University) took victory in the men's 200m IM by one hundredth of a second from Lewis Smith to pip him to a place in next month's World Championship squad.

Kris Gilchrist (City of Edinburgh) put his name into the hat for selection for the 100m breaststroke as Darren Mew won in a time of 1:01.37 albeit half a second off Gilchrist's time from the British Championships in Sheffield.

Simon Burnett claimed the men's 50m freestyle in 22.32 and the men's 200m backstroke saw Marco Loughran victorious.

Gemma Spofforth, who has already broken the British record in the 50m and 200m backstroke, won the 100m in 59.56.

Olympic finalist Jemma Lowe won the 200m butterfly in 2:10.50 but missed the selection requirement for the World Championships.

Sasha Matthews won the 400m in 4:11.65, also not good enough for a berth in Rome, and the women's 50m breaststroke saw Wrexham's Lowri Tynan win in a time just outside of her personal best, 32.50.
