Argentina's Marcos Maidana stopped American Victor Ortiz in the sixth round to claim the World Boxing Association interim light welterweight championship in Los Angeles.
Maidana improved to 26-1 with his 25th victory inside the distance, flattening Ortiz three times in the first two rounds and finishing him off 46 seconds into the sixth round, dropping the US prospect to 24-2 with one drawn.
Ukraine's Andreas Kotelnik, who won a split-decision victory over Maidana last February in Germany, remains the WBA world champion in the division.
He is set to defend that crown against Britain's Amir Khan next month at Manchester.
Elsewhere, undefeated Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico retained his WBO super bantamweight title when challenger Oliver Lontchi quit after the ninth round of their scheduled 12-round contest in Atlantic City.
Lopez, who improved to 26-0, knocked the Canadian-based Lontchi down with right-hand shots in the second and ninth rounds.
Lontchi, 26, could not recover from a crunching body blow and his corner threw in the towel before the 10th.
"Lontchi was real awkward and hard to fight," Lopez, 25, said. "Once I got the body shots in, it was over."
Cameroon-born Lontchi was behind 89-80 on all three cards.
WBA super featherweight champion Jorge Linares retained his title in Mexico with an eighth round stoppage win over Josafat Perez.
Linares, won was making his first title defence, sealed the victory when the one sided bout was ended after 1:42 of the eighth round
And Arthur Abraham made a successful 10th defence of his IBF middleweight title with a 10th round stoppage win over Mahir Oral in Berlin.
Abraham knocked down Oral in the fourth, sixth and 10th rounds as the unbeaten German secured a 30th consecutive professional win.

Neilsenti you said Calzaghe and Hatton bummed out for 30 fights?? what the hell are you saying, Calzaghe beat Eubank in fight 23(then 7 world title defences to hit 30), and hadnt been knocked bandy by an opponent ranked outside the top 10!!!
Yes, true, Barrera was past it but remember he is only 21 or 22. Id love to see him fight prescott again and am sure he will. Butt I want to see Khan really fight Witter.
Point taken, but i dont want to hear people say that Khan is a great fighter cos he beat Barrera. Barrera's had too many wars, was looking for a payday, and should have retired at least two years ago. The only world class fighter I can see on Khan's resume is Perscott and we all know how that end up. Why he didn't Jopn Thaxton for the British title is beyond me not the mention the European.
Why would he fight pacman etc after 22 fights. Everyone thinks murray will beat Khan and he has had 26. So why doesnt he go after them or get as much criticsm as Khan for not doing?
I have to diasgree with you Lance. I think Khan's opponents since he's been teamed up with Roach have been hand picked. I beleive they (Frank Warren) are taking extra care on whom Khan fights, especially after the Prescott debacle. The Barrera fight was a well calculated gamble. Its all part of the machine to hype Khan to manipulate that he is a great boxer. He may be a gerat fighter one day, but i'll wait till he fights people like the PAC-Man, Shane Mosely, Juan Diaz, Ricky Hatton, Celestino Cabberro, Joan Guzman and others.
EUROSPORT READ THIS!
Ortiz was the man who dropped Maidana 3 times in the first two rounds! Ortiz was dropped onc ein the first round!!
Do you guys even watch these fights?! This is disgraceful reporting!
Tai P, you have to agree - he's a far better fighter since he teamed up with Roach. I've said all along to those who have demanded a rematch with Prescott, that the same thing would probably happen again. That's why there is no value in a rematch - everything to lose and nothing much to gain. I agree his chin looks suspect, but he has the look of a far more capable boxer now.
Hmmm... I just dont see what Murray had done to deserve a fight with Khan. If Khan wins and he is worl champ (against kotelnik), then if Murray wants to fight Khan he should fight a WORLD class figher first. By the i dont mean lawton or any one ranked 9th or 8th in the british rankings. he's had 26 fights. shud he not be steeping up a bit now?

I don't doubt Khan at all and I'll be supporting our soon-to-be second British World Champion at present BUT...I think Murray has a certain defiant quality. A never-say-die attitude. Remember, he hasn't been knocked down in his career and I think it would be a great fight. If Khan went beyond 6 rounds, Murray's stamina would kick in and he'll win on points. But how much damage would Khan's hands do before that? Let's hope Kotelnik can't make next week and we'll have Murray to step in! Khan will beat Kotelnik though. In fact, I think Khan v Mayweatehr Jr WILL happen after Marquez v Mayweather Jr. It'll be for a World Title. You heard it here first! Then it will be Pacquiao v FMJ if Khan loses. Roach will sacrifice his younger man as a reconnaisance for his number one.

Thats true, but, who was hatton or calzaghe fighting in their 22nd fight, not people like kotelnik and bareera. khans got so much pressure on him that he cant just bum about for 30 fights like they did. credit to khan for taking the fight. plus, he knew he had chin issues and still wanted to fight prescott, that shows he is a true warrior.
I have to disagree with Lance's comment. Khan has still got it all to prove to be a legimate World class operator. I do think he has the potential but my mind won't change if he beats Kotelnik- the weakness title holder of all the light-welterweight champs right now. Khan's chin was suspect before the Prescott fight, he has hit the mat and wobbled by fighters whom are not known for their punching power. The Barrera fight was floored becuase of two reasons: 1- Barrerra is way past his prime and 2- the cut sustained clearly troubled Barrera. Having said that I thought Khan would have won the anyway if the cut didn't happen. Until Khan fights a credible oppponent I remain on the fence. Plus, I'm not a big fan of his promoter, Hatton saw sense to part ways with him and i only wished Calzaghe did the same earlier in his career.
If murrays not ready for a world title after 26 and khan IS after 22, then that speaks for itself i n terms of talent.
What annoys me is people saying Murray would do this or that to Khan. Remember that Khan is no Lawton. Khan would play with Murray.
Amir was hyped to the max by Warren, because of his fine amateur pedigree, and to sell him to the media and TV. When he was hit by that left hook from Prescott (which would have staggered a middleweight) people lost confidence in his ability to take a punch, which wasn't true. He's done well with Roach to get back, but that's why there is a negative vibe about Khan. Thaxton wouldn't trouble him now, but a few years ago.... I think Jonno would have smashed him!
But to be fair I think Thaxton could test khan. It just shows the state of boxin with all these belts and titles if it is easier to fight for a world title(kotelnik) than a decent fighter/journeyman(thaxton).
Ye thats true but now Khan's under Roache they'd have trouble even landing a shot on him, with his new in and out style. Khans had , what, 22 fights? And every opponent is analysed in huge detail. Is he over this hill? Can he punch? Critics will never leave Khan. However, Murray has has 26 fights and still fighting a 7th ranked british fighter. No-one questions murrays opponents or past opponents. What has khan done foe people to hate him so much.
Thaxton was the most avoided fighter. He boxed my mate Colin Dunne in a war, and gave Micheal Ayers all the trouble in the world. He is a clever awkward switch hitter with KO power in both hands, and he comes to fight. If anyone was the king of the 'who needs him' club, it's Jonno. He would find Amir's chin even at this late stage of his career. Xentertainer is right, Warren would never let his goose with the golden egg anywhere near Thaxton.
Xentertainer you're talking utter nonsense again
