Saturday round-up: Maidana stops Ortiz

Eurosport - Sun, 28 Jun 15:56:00 2009

Argentina's Marcos Maidana stopped American Victor Ortiz in the sixth round to claim the World Boxing Association interim light welterweight championship in Los Angeles.

Maidana improved to 26-1 with his 25th victory inside the distance, flattening Ortiz three times in the first two rounds and finishing him off 46 seconds into the sixth round, dropping the US prospect to 24-2 with one drawn.

Ukraine's Andreas Kotelnik, who won a split-decision victory over Maidana last February in Germany, remains the WBA world champion in the division.

He is set to defend that crown against Britain's Amir Khan next month at Manchester.

Elsewhere, undefeated Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico retained his WBO super bantamweight title when challenger Oliver Lontchi quit after the ninth round of their scheduled 12-round contest in Atlantic City.

Lopez, who improved to 26-0, knocked the Canadian-based Lontchi down with right-hand shots in the second and ninth rounds.

Lontchi, 26, could not recover from a crunching body blow and his corner threw in the towel before the 10th.

"Lontchi was real awkward and hard to fight," Lopez, 25, said. "Once I got the body shots in, it was over."

Cameroon-born Lontchi was behind 89-80 on all three cards.

WBA super featherweight champion Jorge Linares retained his title in Mexico with an eighth round stoppage win over Josafat Perez.

Linares, won was making his first title defence, sealed the victory when the one sided bout was ended after 1:42 of the eighth round

And Arthur Abraham made a successful 10th defence of his IBF middleweight title with a 10th round stoppage win over Mahir Oral in Berlin.

Abraham knocked down Oral in the fourth, sixth and 10th rounds as the unbeaten German secured a 30th consecutive professional win.

  1. Murray lost his title by being a quarter of an ounce overweight! I agree, rules are rules and so he deserved to be stripped of his title. But he still went in and won impressively when the bout took place. Murray is pure granite and needs a stern test. If he KO's Thaxton, Khan should be next. Because I believe Thaxton could also KO Khan with his hammer fists. And that's why Warren made sure they (Thaxton against Khan) never met.

  2. Ye good match-ups but i doubt the murray fight will ever happen. What has Muray done to deserve to fight Khan? He lost hi own british title cus he was so unprofesional. If Murray is t Khans level then why is he not going for a world title?

  3. With all this global warming and excessive heat, English cities will never be cancer free now the ozone layer has eroded. And what about people born in July? The are technically Cancerians. Get rid of them because of when they were born? Really, what nonsense!

  4. Well done British Board of Boxing for banning Chisora for a while. Pity they didn't force him to fight Tyson Fury though because he would smash Chisora into next week! Can't wait for York Hall, July 16th. It's a great line up of top domestic fighters. Here's my dream list for a November Fight Night at the O2 Arena...

Fury v Williams or Rogan (British or Commonwealth Title?)
Murray v Khan (World Title maybe?)
    Froch v Kessler (Unification fight)
Witter v Prescott (World title maybe?)
    Munroe v Dunne (European Title?)

    Any thoughts?

  8. Froch v Pavlick? Pavlick was found out at lightheavy, but there's only a few pounds difference at supermiddle. Not sure of the winner, Froch has a big heart but he's easy to hit. Pavlick hits hard and I think he has better boxing skills, but it's a 50/50 fight if it happens. I'd say Carl being the bigger man to prevail in a war.

  9. yes thats what we need. I doubt it will happen though. not for at least for 4 fights. I want to see froch fight hopkins. i think its quite funny how so many of these 'great' fighters are scared of him. same thing with old mosley. Why is mayweather fighting a lightweight next when he could of took cotto, mosley, williams, etc?
