Som Tala romps to Plate win

Eurosport - Sun, 28 Jun 08:26:00 2009

Som Tala made all the running in winning the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle, Europe's richest stayers' handicap.

HORSE RACING Jockey Tony Culhane - 0

The nine-year-old romped to the £180,000 contest, eading from the start in the two-miler to win by three-quarters of a length from Wells Lyrical.

"I have had a few rides going into the race with half-chances, but all have bombed out so it is great to have won it at last," jockey Tony Culhane said.

"This is the first time I have ridden Som Tala, but (trainer Mick Channon) is a great man to ride for - he gives you a free rein to ride your race and whatever decision you make, he stands by you.

"I did not want to make sure I gave the advantage of a good draw away so we went on and I knew nothing would get past him in the closing stages.

"I have been riding for 24 years and you need to be riding in these good races on horses with a good chance."

Culhane and Channon added to their success by landing the Maiden Stakes with The Human League.

  2. Are there you are, been looking all over for the NUFC site, fancy finding it nestled between Notts Forrest and Boro eh, how did that happen then? oh yeah that's right a lowsy team, lowsy club, lowsy managers, and supporters who don't know when they've got it good

    Some of your clients?
That wasn't you I saw on the Quayside at 11.30pm last Saturday evening was it?

  4. toonrdoon.....why all the unwashed so interested who is going to buy the toon, that clown safcalsftm keeps banging on about it as if he is involved and talking about administration etc, change the bleeding record and worry about who brucie is begging to sign.

    From newcastleian1, on Mon 29 Jun 1:40PM
  5. safcalsftm.....fair comment, have nothing against gypsies(i work with 2 of them,i refer to them as that and they just laugh and call me a geordie b.....d)no offence intended, but you seem to get on your high horse and political correctness gone mad @#$%,yet you can spout geordie scum, skunks(you would not say it to my face)the coin throwing you were disgusted with(sjp play-off 1990)yet revelled in it from the clock stand(fulwell) you really are a 2 faced mackem gimp.

    From newcastleian1, on Mon 29 Jun 1:22PM
  6. Why are we discussing Gypsies, apart from them liking horses? Is it because a consortium of Gypsies are buying the club to knock it down and extend the land area for the Hoppings? Still very quiet on the take-over front isn't it? Looks like we're entering what Sir Alex would call "squeeky bum time".

  7. safcalsftm....like i say it is your opinion, you can not be charged with a racist offence for calling someone a pikey!! fact!!

I use that type of language with 2 people:
    Ashleyliam and downy100.
They fully accept it, believe me they call me far, far worse; of course i do not mean it literally!
They are not offended, as i am not offended by their remarks towards me . . . it amuses me!
Like i have ALWAYS maintained, i wish the City of Sunderland no harm, and i wish ALL the people of sunderland, and fans of safc (inc, you!) no harm whatsoever!
Why do you ALWAYS 'conveniently' forget that!!!!
    Take a chill pill man!

  9. Horse-racing? Who gives a stuf about horses except Owen? Mustn't be any progress to report on the take-over. Is it stalling? Only one more day until Ashley's deadline.

From toonrdoon, on Mon 29 Jun 9:07AM
  10. cameron re your post 19 - how was expected that your post 5 was part of a private conversation? Was it addressd to anyone? No! Now stop being so prissy and remember that you are the first to tell people that these pages are for everyone. I bet you were one of those kids who wouldn't let anyone else play with their toys or football.

  11. newcastleian1 re: your posts 17 & 18 - "Pikey" is a derogatory term referring to Gypsies, Gypsies are an acknowledged racial grouping, therefore "Pikey" is racist.
Geordie and Mackem refer to regional or sub-regional populations, not a racial group, and neither term is taken as derogatory anymore by those at whom it is targeted. A bit of education first thing, eh?

  12. yes think the shirt thing was defo just to get back at the supporters but then most of u lot don't wear shirts anyway. The other thing is why has he not given shearer the job they reckon the intrested parties all want him so where is the problem or is it that the only intrested party is fat freddie and they are hoping someone else comes along and shows some intrest

    From heslop448, on Sun 28 Jun 11:23PM
  13. Heslop, he's even bringing calderwood back to reform the legendary partnership with hughton!
And i swear that away shirt is a deliberate act of spite from him; i'm not kidding, i truly believe it!
The only good thing to come out of this is that his reputation has been totally destroyed; the frightening thing is, he is a vindictive bar steward and won't go quietly.

From cameron w, on Sun 28 Jun 11:15PM
  14. ian yes we need at least 6 new players maybe more and it will be hard to attract them to come to us but when u look at the league this year the likes of burnley hull birmingham and wolves all will struggle to attract quality players as well.the best we can hope for is mid table

    From heslop448, on Sun 28 Jun 11:12PM
  15. heslop....unless brucie brings in about 6 quality players,i think you will struggle like last season??

    From newcastleian1, on Sun 28 Jun 11:07PM
  16. very true cameron theres still a lot to come out yet the worrying thing is its taking so long preseason starts on wed and u still not got manager so who will be in charge, think ashley still has a couple of bombs to drop yet. and ian i'll play my winnings up on chelsea to win the league much safer option than us getting relegated

    From heslop448, on Sun 28 Jun 11:00PM
  17. 9-4?
Even i wouldn't touch that mate!
I find that exraordinary; i'm still not convinced ashley's dirty work's even finished yet!
