Som Tala romps to Plate win

Eurosport - Sun, 28 Jun 08:26:00 2009

Som Tala made all the running in winning the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle, Europe's richest stayers' handicap.

HORSE RACING Jockey Tony Culhane - 0

The nine-year-old romped to the £180,000 contest, eading from the start in the two-miler to win by three-quarters of a length from Wells Lyrical.

"I have had a few rides going into the race with half-chances, but all have bombed out so it is great to have won it at last," jockey Tony Culhane said.

"This is the first time I have ridden Som Tala, but (trainer Mick Channon) is a great man to ride for - he gives you a free rein to ride your race and whatever decision you make, he stands by you.

"I did not want to make sure I gave the advantage of a good draw away so we went on and I knew nothing would get past him in the closing stages.

"I have been riding for 24 years and you need to be riding in these good races on horses with a good chance."

Culhane and Channon added to their success by landing the Maiden Stakes with The Human League.

  1. its not much of a price for newcastle to get promoted only 9/4 which is very short for a team with no manager etc lets hope something happens soon.even worse is that they are only 14/1 to get relegated which is pretty poor as they should be at least 33/1

  10. You're right JojO (comment 14) and I can't believe it has taken me so long to realise. I had previously given him the benefit of the doubt and accepted some of his comments as bravado, how wrong I've been - total egotistical arrogance that's what it is with him, he's always right and everyone else is wrong. His beloved Doon can do no wrong and the Magnificent Mackems can do no right, the poor deluded fool!!

  11. Hold on, I take back my post 10 - this item appears as there are no other Newcastle footie stories here and this is the closed they could get. They obviously don't want to repeat the stories from the Sunday press as it would only depress the poor Mags (and some of the letter writers in the Sunday Sun were sounding positively suicidal).

  12. Comment 11: see my earlier post(s) re: camerot. (S)He loves to talk about humility, reason, banter etc...but then launches into viciferous tirades against anyone having a pop at his beloved baby-poo bananas...like I said before, preaches one rule, lives by another...

  13. cameron w (comment 8) - I don't know how YOU have the gall ! What a total hypocrite you are. You're rumbled, good and proper - and don't bother trying to deny it.

  14. The baby-poo bananas
    Are coming down the stairs
    From premiership to conference
    That caught them unawares

  15. cameron w (comment 5) - another candidate for anger management therapy I think. What's happened to your banter, its all insults and racist insults at that ("pikey" is racist!). And you dare to lecture me!!!! Unbelievable! Then again, why am I not surprised?

  19. Where can i comment on that away strip?????? Zebras disguised as skunks become baby-poo bananas. Great idea....the home opposition will injure themselves in hysterics, letting Martins shoot over the bar as many times as he likes before finally getting it right. Who knows, even Lua-Loosar maight score a decent goal. ho ho
