Wimbledon - Murray blasts into fourth round

Eurosport - Sun, 28 Jun 11:50:00 2009

World number three Andy Murray produced another sterling display to beat Serbia's Viktor Troicki 6-2 6-3 6-4 and book his place in the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Murray delivered a masterclass from start to finish and will next face Swiss 19th seed Stanislas Wawrinka, who came from a set down to beat American Jesse Levine 5-7 7-5 6-3 6-3.

Murray got off to a steady start but took control of the match in the sixth game, breaking when Troicki slapped down two double faults.

The Scot then broke again two games later to seal the first set when his opponent dumped the ball into the net.

The second set was equally one-sided as Murray broke in just the second game, with a running backhand passing shot, to seize control before taking a two sets to love lead with his 11th and 12th aces of the match.

Troicki offered a little more resistance in the third set but the Serb was always playing catch up after slapping a forehand into the net to concede serve in the first game.

Troicki even held his first, and only, break point of the match in the fourth game but Murray quickly slammed the door shut with an ace and a forehand winner. The Scot threatened again in the seventh and ninth games and Troicki did well to hold on.

But there was nothing he could do when Murray stepped up to serve out the match and the 22-year-old emphatically booked his place in the second week with an ace down the centre of the court.

Murray's performances over the last two years, which have propelled him into the world's top three, have made him a household name in Britain and expectation is building that he can become the nation's latest sporting hero.

Four more performances of the quality he has shown so far would take him tantalisingly close to becoming the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry 73 years ago but Murray, as always, is taking it all in his stride.

"I'm very happy I won the three matches this week," said Murray. "I hope that I can keep it going next week because my performances were pretty solid."

"(The expectation) is just one of those things you have to get used to dealing with. It hasn't troubled me this week. I'd be very surprised if it did next week."

"I wanted to finish the match as quickly as possible," he added. "It would have been a nice bit of history, I guess, the first match to play under the roof but I wasn't that worried."

"I enjoy playing indoors. But when it's sort of right at the end of the match I wanted to finish it before the rain came."

  5. Donney what is your problem? are you even scottish? To me it just looks like you've left caps lock on and are too retarded to turn it off again. And Russel is just saying what everyone else is thinking. Their are probably several millions of people signed up to Yahoo, and i can gaurentee that none of them like you.

  7. No 273 are you serious. Two years ago Murray played Roddick at Wimbledon and beat him. He's a much better player now and Roddick is on the decline. Whereas I like Roddick he has no chance of winning Wimbledon, his best days are past. To me Murray can only have one really testing match if he is to win the final, and that would be in the final itself. Would you put money on anyone in his half of the draw to win the title? I know I wouldn't

  8. Well done Murray, I really enjoy watching his matches, to see the different spins and tactics he throws in. It must be horrendous having all this media pressure on his shoulders, but he seems to be coping. People are right to hope though as he's more talented than Henman was and being in such good recent form suggests he could do it. You can only play the players you are drawn against, its not his fault who he's played. If you are world #3 then you earn the right to avoid top 16 until round 4 :-)

  9. What surprises me in Andy Murrays part of the draw is while players like Llyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick, Wawrinka are been tested with players that have hot services Murray on the other hand have been playing with players who are serving double faults, it makes you to wonder how was that part of the draw arranged, if this was Federer draw I know people would not have rested with all kind of insults, but now I see the reason why they already picked Murray to get to the finals. The only known player in his draw was Ernest Gulbis (Lat), who is Robert Kendric? Who for God’s own name is Viktor Troicki they all have one thing in common smiling feeling so happy to be playing in the new open roof as if that is not enough he Murray will then be meeting another player who also does not have hot service, a player who also have been enjoying the draw without been tested and at the end of the day when Murray gets to the final they will say he played so hard, played so hard? When he will be meeting a tired and worn out Llyton H or Andy Roddick in the Semis, what a very funny tournament well arranged ANDY MURRAY WILL START PLAYING HIS WIMBLEDON MATCHES WHEN HE GETS TO THE SEMIS TO PLAY A TIRED OR WORN OUT LLYTON H OR ANDY RODDICK

  13. Murray may have had it easy so far, but he won't waltz to the final. Roddick will be a tough semi. As for the whole english/scottish thing. It isn't us fans that started it. Watch re-runs of Henmann, he was a "Brit", Murray was introduced as "Scottish"!

Talent and exciting play matter more to me than a persons nationality. Murray is a boring player. So far he's played no one of any repute. I don't think there are any serious challengers in his half of the draw. So he should make the final. He is extremely lucky to have such an easy draw. I hope Federer wins, not because Murrays Scottish, but because I enjoy watching him play. I don't enjoy watching Murray. I alsop get fed up with the endless hype. Commentators should be more realistic instead of pandering to the hype. Until Murray plays someone o9f note and beatys him how can they say he's playing great tennis. It's pathetic

  18. Does this site have no moderator? Why is it full of abusive tirades between individuals on the subject of national differences? What has any of this to do with tennis? I've heard more rational discussions between small children!

  19. Andy Murray is a BRILLIANT young tennis player. Nothing else mattters. He may have said something daft about the national football team a couple of years ago but thats all it was ...daft and he was even younger then!!! Healthy competition between nations is a good thing but when it gets vile and abusive, like many of the message posted here, dont you have to ask yourselves a few questions? It is the 21st century after all, we are supposed to be civilised. Come on Andy!!
