Premier League - De Gea has United medical

Tue, 28 Jun 08:21:00 2011

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea is expected to complete his medical ahead of his proposed move to Manchester United today.

De Gea, 20, has been widely tipped to fill the gloves vacated by the retired Edwin van der Sar but remained tight lipped over a move until the European U21 Championship finished.

After Spain won the final on Saturday, De Gea has wasted little time in moving to complete the transfer as he was pictured arriving at Bridgewater Hospital in Manchester on Monday.

The photographs, which have circulated around British media, showed a hastily-assembled attempt by staff to shield De Gea with a blanket, which was too small to conceal the 6'4" Madrid native from onlookers.

Before the championships United and Atletico were reported to have agreed a fee of £18 million for the young keeper. He is now o the verge of sealing the move by signing a five-year contract, although it may not be made official until Friday July 1 when his deal with his new agent becomes official.

De Gea, who lies behind Iker Casillas, Pep Reina and Victor Valdes in the senior Spain pecking order, rose to prominence in the 2009-10 season and started every La Liga game last campaign, keeping 11 clean sheets.

United are on something of a spending spree this summer, adding Ashley Young and Phil Jones to their ranks in recent weeks, with more signings expected before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side won the Premier League last season but were well-beaten by Barcelona in the Champions League final.

And with Van der Sar, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville retiring, an injection of new blood is needed to fend off a renewed challenge from big spenders Chelsea, Liverpool and local rivals Manchester City.

  1. First time he lets in more than one goal he'll be out and on a plane back to Spain. United bozo keepers of the last 25 years years Bosnich, Bartez, Leighton, Massimo Taibi, Les Sealy, Kuscshack Foster .....even Schmikael and VDS made some howlers in their day

  5. a fed fan, so you have decided, I don't like Manchester United and their fans. How wrong you are. In my time I have probably been to Old Trafford and also watched Manchester United away from home more times than many of the so called supporters that come on here and I have many friends who are good Manchester United supporters. Yes I have a go at the blowbags who cannot see football beyond Manchester United but "bad mouthing", I think not. Out of interest two of my favourite teams of all time were the Busby Babes and the team of the Best, Law, Charlton era. I see there are some of your own "supporters" on here not entirely happy about De Gea and getting thumbed down as a result. Should they also move on?

  7. 327 a little xenophobic? I think your attitude is seriously poor. It is you who focuses on the origins of people and you are projecting your own hangups on De Gea without giving him a chance.

I am a UNITED FAN but I think this is one of the worst signings ever by SAF. Time will prove me right or wrong but lets wait and see what he is made of, I think United would have done well by signing the son of Peter Schemichael from Leeds United or the best Penalty stopper in the premier league from Birmigham instead of going for this Spaniard, he will let the Spanish teams beat United anytime they meet to boost his love and chances of being labeled great back at home. Obviously, the only opponents to challenge United in Europe will be from Spain - Real Madrid and Barcelona so SAF should have been careful not to sign anybody from there because we shall definitely meet them at the Champions league and he shall favor his country team instead of United. Why could United not go to USA for a goal keeper?

  13. Keith j, you go on about jealousy and hatred of Manchester United on here. To prove your point you use 2 finals in 3 years. 4 championships in 5 years. I am totally neutral and look at football as a whole. I see Real Madrid, 5 European cup wins in 5 years, Ajax 3 wins in 3 years, Bayern Munich 3 wins in 3 years and finally the one you will not like and probably hate to read. During an 8 year period from the late 70's to the early 80's Liverpool, 15 trophies not counting 4 charity shields during the same period. Be proud of your teams achievements but it is not the be all and end all and certainly nothing for anyone to be jealous of or hate your team because of.

  17. Sir Alex is a genius. All his signings has strengthened the team and it is a formality that we will win our 20th title now. Afterall we won the title comfortably last season and now we are stronger, while no one else in the premiership has managed to strengthen their squads. Queen Kenny tried at Looserpool but found he could only sign those players the top four did not want. He offered more money for Jones and Young than Man Utd did but the players refused to go to Looserpool and chose the champions instead.
