Liverpool closing in on Spurs' Keane

Mon 28 Jul, 03:56 PM

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool are set to sign Robbie Keane from Premier League rivals Tottenham within the next 24 hours, a source told AFP on Monday.

The Republic of Ireland striker is undergoing a medical at Liverpool's Melwood training ground and, should he be given the all clear, is set to move to Anfield for a fee reported to be 18 million pounds (36 million dollars), rising to 20 million (39 million dollars) depending on bonuses.

Keane scored 15 league goals last season and a move to Liverpool would see him partner Fernando Torres up front with Reds boss Rafael Benitez looking to increase his strike power in a quest to bring the title back to Anfield.

A boyhood Liverpool fan, Keane, who has also played for Inter Milan and Leeds, could link-up with his new team-mates on Tuesday in Spain, where Benitez's side are currently on a pre-season tour, and make his debut for the club in Wednesday's friendly against Villarreal.
