West Ham scored three extra-time goals to beat Macclesfield Town 4-1 and progress to the third round of the Carling Cup on an evening that promised so much for lower league teams but delivered little.
Sunderland, Fulham, Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United also came from behind to win.
Macclesfield, seventy one places below West Ham in the league pyramid, took the lead in the fifth minute when Gareth Evans got on the end of an in-swinging Ahmed Dean corner.
The Silkmen looked as though they were about to cause the shock of the competition, but with 15 minutes remaining Lee Bowyer headed home a Julien Faubert cross to set up a tense finale.
The game moved to extra time, but not before Izak Reid got himself sent off for a second bookable offence. With the extra man the Hammers - managed by Alan Curbishley (pictured) - went on to win comfortably with goals from Carlton Cole, Zavon Hines and Kyel Reid.
Sunderland also needed an extra 30 minutes to beat Nottingham Forest at the City Ground after coming from behind to win 2-1.
Robert Earnshaw punished a Nyron Nosworthy foul on the edge of the box with a free-kick that he curled over the wall, leaving Craig Gordon with little chance.
And it looked like the Mackems were out until the 86th minute when El-Hadji Diouf picked up the scraps of a poor Andy Reid free-kick before squaring it for Phil Bardsley to hook home from two yards.
Three minutes into extra time, second-half substitute David Healy won it for Sunderland with a goal on his debut after Grant Leadbitter's effort was parried by Paul Smith.
Fulham were also members of the late show, with Danny Murphy scoring a 93rd minute winner against Leicester. The London club had been trailing 2-1 as late as the 83rd minute.
Paul Dickov had cancelled out Zoltan Gera's opener and Andy King had put the Foxes 2-1 up, only to see Jimmy Bullard level and Murphy tuck home the winner.
Blackburn had the easiest run out of the night, beating Grimsby Town 4-1 but not before falling behind after seven minutes. A foul by debutant Carlos Villanueva allowed Mariners' full back Tom Newey to step up and beat Blackburn's deputy keeper James Brown.
A 20-yard Villanueva curler levelled matters, before Matt Derbyshire gave Rovers the lead on 32 minutes. Derbyshire then turned provider for Brett Emerton for Blackburn's third, which effectively put the tie beyond the League Two side. Man of the match Derbyshire wrapped things up on 55 minutes.
Sheffield United were also forced to come from behind with two goals in the last 10 minutes to beat Huddersfield Town 2-1.

So we beat the mighty macclesfield town after extra time and macclesfield down to 10 men. Bring on the big boys now,Morecambe, Aldershot town, Accrington. We fear none of them. Now will people start seeing what a mug curbs is. He couldnt manage a @#$% without help. Out him now before he can @#$% our £8 million on more dross
If we were good it should have been 5 or 6 nil upwards, they scored first after what was it five minutes, what are they doing !!! then it takes a man to be sent off for us to start scoring.this all bodes well for the rest of the season.I think not...here we go again, struggle struggle struggle

@Gaskini - it's called gambling for a reason, if you can't afford to lose it you shouldn't lay it. Anyway if you knew anything about football you'd know
a)never to bet on the Hammers to win a home tie against lower league opposition
and b)all prem clubs will look to field several fringe players for these games - the irony here being that the Hammers actually put out a fairly strong team and still struggled - and that's coming from a West Ham fan lol
it should be scrap 4 all i care.obviously WEST HAM made a gamble with the game to raise some cash to offset some transfer deficit;if not tell me why i should lose more than 9000euros because the HAMMERS decided to play a draw with a team not known AND WERE EVEN PLAYING AT HOME.@#$% HAMMER ,@#$% YOUR SEASON
Mr Hamer, tell that to the lower league clubs who make extra income to keep there teams alive...
Happy Hammer (after lasts nights epic)
john hamer obviously a big team supporter wanting to cut off some revenue options for smaller clubs!!!
John try thinking of bigger picture, no small clubs ,less competition for bigger clubs, less revenue for clubs who find the younger players which the big clubs buy later on .
i go for that bet, guarantee he gets more than 8,dont get me wrong i think he pony but he will get close to dble figures.so what ur price
Why should the league cup be scrapped ? The players today are much fitter than yesterday. This might only be the way to win a trophey for some clubs. Two or three games a week tp these players should be nothing. They are fit enough to play every day, without a knock... granted..
i think the carling cup should be scrapped Too many game played on top of league games
curbs may have scrapped through but still needs to go, just not good enough
