Liverpool were saved the embarrassment of an early exit from the Champions League as Dirk Kuyt's extra-time winner saw the Reds to a 1-0 win over Standard Liege at Anfield.
Penalties loomed after the tie went into extra-time deadlocked at 0-0 on aggregate after 180 fruitless minutes.
But with just three minutes remaining, Kuyt stole in at the back post to knee home Ryan Babel's cross to ensure Liverpool would take their place in the draw for the group stages on Thursday afternoon.
With an estimated £25million jackpot on the line, the winner was met with absolute delirium from the Anfield crowd and a look of enormous relief from manager Rafael Benitez.
Just as in the first leg, Liverpool started slowly and twice needed goalkeeper Pepe Reina to keep them in the match, first to keep out Deiudonne Mbokani's low left-foot fizzer from 25 yards and then Marouane Fellaini's improvised volley after Igor De Camargo had clipped a cross back into the box.
Liverpool failed to test Liege keeper Rorys Aragon Espinoza until the half-hour mark, when Fabio Aurelio fired in a shot from distance after taking a quick free-kick, his low effort and comfortably saved at the near post.
The much-vaunted Robbie Keane - Fernando Torres partnership completely failed to spark, with all of the meaningful possession going the way of the visitors, who again looked sharp, ambitious and creative in their attacks.
Roared on by 3,000 Belgian supporters, Liege again made the better start after the interval, with the Liverpool fans becoming increasingly disillusioned with their side's lacklustre showing.
Benitez waited until just after the hour mark to make his change, replacing Yossi Benayoun with Ryan Babel - the same change he made in the Premier League four days earlier, inspiring a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Middlesbrough.
Whether it was the introduction of Babel or just a sense of desperation, Liverpool did begin to turn up the pressure and enjoy more of the ball inside the Liege final third as the game entered the last 20 minutes.
Liverpool's best chance of the whole tie fell to Keane with 15 minutes to go, but the Irishman mis-kicked his shot on goal after a free-kick had been played short and cut-back into his path, eight yards out.
Kuyt and Xabi Alonso fired in decent efforts from distance as the end of 90 minutes loomed, but the expected charge on goal never really materialised and the tie was forced into extra-time.
Neither side were able to create any chances of real note in extra-time, although Liverpool continued to do all the pressing as Liege appeared to settle for taking their chances in a penalty shootout.
Nabil El Zhar went down in the box with just minutes to go under a challenge from former Newcastle defender Oguchi Onyewu, enormously impressive on the night, but the referee ruled that it was not a penalty.
But with just three minutes remaining, Liverpool got the goal that saw them through. Babel teased the full-back before curling a fine cross to the back post where Kuyt just got ahead of his marker to shin the ball inside the post.

And rafa benitez has been our most succesfull manager since bob paisley in a way so lets just give him a chance
Yes liverpool played aufull on wednesday but that will be the only time they will play bad all those so called liverpool fans barating the team they so call love go and find another team to support then because if u dont say anything good then you dont deserve to support the most succesfull team on the planet.LIVERPOOL will come good and LIVERPOOL will win the league no doubt about that COME ON THE RED MEN YOUS ARE ALL LEGENDS in my eyes
Benitez? - my favourite for the chop this season. He has bought so much dross over the past few seasons, he has excess players on his hands that he couldn't sell.
He spent £40+ millions on players in the 2007 close season then whinged that he hadn't got the right players by Xmas! No wonder the Yanks and Parry are p......d off with the bloke.
He seems incapable of formulating his best team and sticking with it and his stupid rota system has no meaning or sense.
£19m for Keane? - what a ridiculous buy, you didn't get much opposition from Spurs on that one did you? He should keep the bench boys company this season.
My personal view of Benitez? - he has taken a once great club rapidly downwards, they have success because they are marginally better than the remainder of the teams below the top three, but they will not penetrate the top trio, the team is not good enough.
Relations between him and the board will get worse and you can sense the frustration of the fans already this season. Their performance on Wednesday was dire to say the least. Get your cases packed Rafa, it won't be long!
if rafa shud go then imagine tht he left, who do u think the best successor?how long shud we give him time?then he failed and we change again, failed again and so on...rafa has proved lfc can win trophy but we cant win evrything evryyear coz we r not shaolin soccer....but we r heading the right way..we wil only became better...so y want to get rid of gud manager?correct me if im wrong...n im sorry if im wrong...
the 1st thing lfc need is by winning games and not losing even if they had to do it by luck...then other team will start to think lfc is hard to beat...the fear wil start to come frm other teams...then lfc players wil start to get their confidence, morale and form...this is wat rafa is doing at the moment...get the resuls and building team spirit...we got the talents(babel, keane, dossena etc),the players(gerrard, torres, reina etc),leader and the fans...the results is there and the beauty wil come, both wil gel and mighty kop wil be on top again...taj mahal wasnt built in one day my frens...liverpoool 4eva!!!!!!!
Ha ha ha ha ha
I see Scott S is back on the mighty reds page.
What a Dirk @#$% he is.
LOL

Have to agree with Sheik...we are unable to win PL with Benitez , it isnt the squad plenty of talent evident there its Benitez tactics that are the obstacle to real success. We are now indeed a team geared to not losing rather than going out there with a ruthless winning attitude. The supreme one touch pass and run into space of the glory days under Mr Shankly Bob Paisley Joe Fagan King Kenny Dalgleish are now under the reign of Toooooo Cautious Benitez just a memory. He has had the money but his forays into the transfer market have yielded little of lasting value Torres Reina thats about it for Big Game Players...then he wants to sell a class act like Alonso after selling Crouchy a man with proven goal scoring ability who offered us a different option in a game and posed serious problems for our opposition ? Been a RED for fifty years and have to say its sad to see us playing this kind of dull rubbish football...lets get rid of Benitez and get back to basics one touch and run into space... the stuff that thrilled the football world . Enough of this dross !
appalling management and organisation. Keane (poor sod) had absolutely no idea where he was meant to be last night as his team mates ran at him rather than pass the ball. Even Torres looked bemused at times. The whole thing was a complete shambles. Rafa's hopeless. It's a team geared up not to lose rather than win. It's all looking a bit too spanish for me. Last night he needed some of those players he got rid of.
Shiek - I was referring to start of the 2006/07 season .
I know mate I`m also concerned , it just seems hard for LFC to open the score even with player like Torres in the squad. For me it is crucial to have Gerrard and Torres in best(full) form and either Keane or Babel to raise their game.I just hope we have better defence than last year ( to many scares last year ) and at least one great winger as addition (winger that could link well with Gerrard), addition needed for us as you said for "playing good passing football".
cheers mate
when barca were playing so attractively but didnt win anything people were booing them....when liverpool were playing ugly but winning all their games people are complaining...i hate it when liverpool were not performing but everytime they scored the winning goal...dont be so greedy friends..we want attractive game, the 3 points, yhe CL, title race and everything BUT losing....they didnt play attractive, but they're not losing...wat is the point if they created 100 clear chances but lost the game 0-1? i'll be so happy to if they defended 100 clear chances and went on to win 1-0!!!!
As an LFC man I respek you replika04.. but we LFC did not play the best football in Europe start of last season(and haven't since 80's/early 90's)..what you mean is we scored goals & got some good RESULTS... ( we played far better under Houllier) Yeah at the end of last season we played some decent football against alot of mediocre teams with not too much too play for.. WHEN THE PRESSURE WAS OFF. Under Rafa we specialze in doing well when we are out of the title race.. easiest thing in the world to play ok when the pressure is off. Great teams play well when the pressure is ON MATE. Remember Results is not the same as playing good passing football.. why do people think that as long as you win games it means you are playing well... Anyway I hear ya on the Keane front and will wait a while b4 judging, however Rafa usually pays over the top prices for functional hard-working players ... I want to see us sign some quality players in the Torres, Alonso mould .. not just hard workers.. we need more quality - come on you Reds
... "knee home Ryan Babel's cross"... or ..."shin the ball inside the post." Which one is correct, Mr. reporter, Alex Sharratt?. You think you know how to report using any english you want. Does the picture above shows that Kurt 'knee' the ball into the post. You should mind your use of english from today or stop and go for professional course in reporting.
meanwhile, it is only God that saved Liverpool. Standard Liege were better and i wished they won and liverpool lost. Upon the world-class players they have, they still struggled with SL away and home. Standard Liege deserved the win becos they played better than Liverpool - who were playing long and boring, carpenter (cut and nail)and kick and follow football. I wished they lost. Liverpool for gutter. Arsenal 4 Life.
Two years ago at the start of that season Liverpool played the best football in Europe , attractively they were so creative but there was no Torres in the team and with couple of draws they lost the battle for Premier league ........LFC played great football at the end of the last season also, but it was too late for the premiership.............this for the ones that say LFC cant play attractive under Rafa`s lead.
About Keane ............... lets wait a bit,the talent is there I`m not so concern about Keane starting to score for LFC.........Whether is overpriced or not also just the time will tell and why not make a parallel with his former teammate Berba.
wat manner of champions r dis aniways..always flatterin 2 deceive...benitez is realli on holiday in england...enuff cash to play with..to blow on mediocre players...(yeah..the kop is filled with a lot of dem..el zar and co...)wyl at de same time insultivelytryin to get rid of world class players..ie alonso..for "world class" barry...if he was still in his native spain...me thinks he wouldnt hav stil bin the gaffer
As a LFC fan, I'm worried, we won last night but the best team lost!!
All the top teams have a top class LEFT-BACK & RIGHT-BACK we aint, that's where we are lacking...................we tend to play through the middlel the time!!
RAFA wake up mate, after watching last nights game an the last two permier games..............we have to hope the retrn of MASCHARNIO wakes us p before the Man Utd game!!!
LFC have TOO MANY PLAYERS, an what the hell did he sign SAMMY LEE for.............for his SHOUTING at the players, while RAFA does SIGN LANGUAGE?
It's time for PARRY & MOORE to GO......................an go as fast an far away from LFC as possible!!
RAFA.............you have to sort things out this year...................or you have to go..........as you appear to be going BACKWARDS & lacking ideas!!
Luckypool, outclassed last nite and outplayed, i really wanted liege to win just to see the look on RKs face but Kuyt had other plans anyway GL with winning the thing cause after last nights showing u's wud be lucky qualifying from grp stages.
COYS
Ok so Liverpool have scored late goals in the last 3 matches, how many matches have the mancs scored late goals in to win or draw the match, when they do it there great when Liverpool do they are lucky, after all the game is over when the final whistle blows.so all you manc/arsenal/chelsea fans shut up & grow up. from foreverred
HERE WE GO AGAIN - Rafa gets another reprieve as we get through CL Group phases and papers over obvious cracks.. 1st I am a Liverpool fan... an HONEST fan not blinded to the truth. I've read all your comments.. lol. Lets be honest though do we really deserve to go through? NO. Liege created the better chances over 2 legs & when you look at their set-up & budget compared to ours.. it's not good enough. We have to let Rafa go.. if we have to get knocked out of Europe for that to happen, then so be it. Chima w is right, his transfer record is awful.. too many waste/ordinary players bought then sold.. really only Torres, Alonso, Reina, have truly proved successful.. We will NEVER win the Prem. under him but what upsets me more is our football is @#$%.. basically we cant play good attractive passing football. It's not just about results, if it was ALL OF US would only watch Teletext to check the score. First and foremost football and Sport is entertainment.. so yes it matters HOW you win, not just winning. Thats why teams like Brazil, Barca & Arsenal get Nuff respect from peeps becos to their Managers or Clubs believe QUALITY of FOOTBALL is important too.. in the 80's so did we. Rafa cannot create a team that plays good football PERIOD. 5+ Years guys. I can just about handle not winning the Prem if I am proud of my team when they come off the pitch.. proud of good football and skills etc.. what I can't accept is POOR football... we will be out of the title race by Dec/Jan.. but under no pressure have a good run and finish 3rd or 4th.. sound familiar... Yeah I'm sick of it too. L 4 EVER but get rid of Rafa.
Guess what, here in Namibia we got a national Liverpool supporter's club, with new members signing up regularly,so what does that tell you? They are attracted by the never-say-die attitude of Liverpool's players that go all out, hunting down balls(Kuyt),playing through the pain(Gerrard)and with lots of expectations resting on their shoulders(Keane).Guess what, beautiful football rarely means three points in the bag,so who cares,we got the win !
2 very fit and organized teams, to keep it going for the whole game. I enjoyed it!
