Sakic, 39, was considering retirement following a season in which he missed 38 games due to injury.

The $6 million deal sees Sakic return for another year with the team he has played for since the 1995-96 season.

"Ultimately it came down to the fact that I still enjoy playing and competing," Sakic said. "I'm comfortable with my conditioning and my overall health."

Sakic has recorded 1,629 points, the most among active NHL players. He has 623 goals and 1,006 assists.
