Manchester City have re-signed England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips from Chelsea after three years at Stamford Bridge.
Wright-Phillips signed a four-year contract after the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee believed to be around £9 million.
The 27-year-old started his career at Maine Road, making over 175 appearances in a seven-year spell at City.
He moved to Chelsea in summer 2005 but, despite costing £21m, was used predominantly as a substitute by Jose Mourinho and his successor as manager Avram Grant.
New boss Luiz Felipe Scolari deemed him surplus to requirements, and is looking to sign Real Madrid forward Robinho before the transfer deadline passes on Monday.
Wright-Phillips is set to make his debut at the City of Manchester Stadium, against Chelsea, on September 13, and said: "Obviously I'm delighted to come back to City and I just can't wait to started again."
Manager Mark Hughes added: "I've always admired him and he's certainly been a target of mine since I came to the football club.
"To actually secure the deal and bring Shaun back home is a fantastic coup for us and I'm sure the supporters will be just as excited as we are to have him back at Manchester City."
Wright-Phillips will be officially presented in a news conference on Friday.
The signing comes against a backdrop of uncertainty at the club, specifically over owner and former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who faces corruption charges in his native country.
Nonetheless, City's summer spending has closed in on the £40m mark, following the purchases of Jo, Vincent Kompany and Tal Ben Haim, the latter also arriving from Chelsea.
City saw off interest from Everton, who were also in the running for the winger. The Toffees have endured a torrid summer in the transfer market and look worryingly short of players.

Chrisphor F u can talk cant u u support hatrlepool u weirdo so u proberbly dont watch much PL shaun's 1 of the best palyers city ever had scored lot of goals and set lots up his quick as well a brilliant winger when u use him often but dont think city gain 12 mil tho because they proberbly spend it on there debts (every club has it even if they dont tell u) so u wont even have in hartlepool wat do that mean?? he beat the goalie from the half way line and turn the players inside out
Good for him...SWP can play football now
not a bad bit of business sell him to stupid chelsea for an overated price of 21million and three years later get him back for 9million thats good money making 12million profit , chelsea just loves to spend the russians money he must be a muppet as well to allow this to happen ??? swp is not that good a player , but man city has made some good money on him , shev as now left chelsea how much for i wonder , less than the 30million they paid for him i bet , the russian will soon start to think one day why his money is going down and not winning any titles how much has he put into chelsea for what a few titles and a couple of cups ?????? ,yes he is a mega rich man but even they have limits , or his he that thick and is just laundering someone elses money who knows but the money will dry up if they keep spending like this , lets hope they do for all our happiness , come on pompey , and yes we have a russian in charge makes you wonder who they stole the money off in the first place
Shuan is a war horse, he need to play many games to gear him up, look at him when he is with Chelsea, when the manager plays him every game he gets better and better, however, if he was left at the sub bench for a while to rot, he losses all his form. I strongly believe Man city will knows that and will play him in most matches. Just watchout for this small but mighty play. Way...to...go SHUAN!!!!
spot on Roy C, you are dead right
S..mashing, W..onderful, P..riceless. Welcome back Shaun. We love you. Enjoy yourself & make us happy.
Can any of you guys spell or add. Think of all the money that has exchanged hands just to get him back to Man City. Who is gaining from this??? Our friend Sean.
Mr Phillips is yet another journey man who gets on his high horse when he cannot get his place on any of the teams who sign him.Too much money in soccer in England.
New jerseys, both home and away, can you understand who pays for all of this ---- us the fans. My opinion on all this is that we the fans are the losers. Entertainment and real value for money is to be found from a good decent game of HURLING or a bad gage of rugby. Cop on!!!

he should never have left but glad he is back
mikefromprague, have you seen the size of Chelsea's squad?? there's NO WAY they are going to allow a bloke 10-12 games to find his feet, with a squad Chelsea's size you need to hit the ground running or you're out, simple as that...Whenever he started for us he knew he was under pressure and it showed in his play. Sure, he had some good games for us, but in the main he was nervous and played poorly. His best form was shown in the middle of last season when we had injuries and a lot of our players were at the African Nations Cup and he got a half decent run in the side, but as soon as they came back, same old same old.
melaniepoynton What´s the point of buying a player when you won´t let him show his potential?
What a huge mistake done by Benitez. We should have bought him A LFC fan
Good thinking SWP. You made a good move atthe wrong time cos you should've moved last season. Now is your turn to show Chelsea that you can still play real football. Come September 13, 2008 at the city of manchester, u should be a handful for Chelsea and do your best to deny them any victory. You must pay them for under-utilizing you. Good luck.

mukoko_ss - What are you babling on about?
"Thanks an praise for SWP"?
"U was our hero"?
"Breath us or vanish"?
Someone call the mental hospital, I think a patient is missing.
Christopher F: Your insight is amazing; how did it ever transpire that you didn't become a player/manager/coach/physio/groundsman/steward/club shop till operator..?
welcome back SWP!!!!
were all missing the point, man city have lost 21m here not gained 12 - the fact is hes not a very good player, infact hes that bad i was expecting him to sign for newcastle who regulary recruit failed players at bigger clubs who dont quite make it. i wouldnt pick him for hartlepool hes hopeless, cant pass, shoot hear or tackle
