Jelena Jankovic after laying face down on the court during her match with Sofia Arvidsson: "I was just tired and I couldn't get up. I was so exhausted at that moment. I was breathing hard and I didn't have the energy to get up. I would have loved to take a nap on court, because I really was exhausted. But rules are rules, I had to keep going."

Last year's runner-up Novak Djokovic after injuring his ankle during a first-round victory: "It's okay. It's going to be good in two days, I'm sure. I was thinking more of it than I was really actually feeling the pain, so it's not really a big deal. At that certain moment, I felt big pain so I just had to tape the ankle. But it's going to be all right."

Nikolay Davydenko after his first-round win: "After Wimbledon, I lost mentally. I was losing everything. I didn't want to really play tennis, I didn't want to prepare for tournaments. That's why I didn't play very good in Toronto and Cincinnati. I was really tired mentally. But I still played. I don't want to quit tennis. I try to play better and better and maybe I find my game. Maybe I'll find my confidence mentally and can play very well."

Russian world number five Davydenko on the difficulty of conducting interviews in a foreign language: "If you're pressured to say you need in two years to speak Russian or speak Chinese, what can you do? You can't. For some guys, it's difficult."

Svetlana Kuznetsova on struggling in the first set of her clash with Sorana Cirstea: "I don't think you should be coming into a Grand Slam event and playing your best game in the first [rounds]. I want to grow with every match, and play better and better. Today I played much better than my first match, so it's looking good for me."

American former world number one Lindsay Davenport (pictured) after reaching third round: "It was only when I got back from China last Saturday that I was able to start practising for singles. So to expect I would be out here and be perfect is probably shooting for the stars a little too much. I don't feel like I'm that far off. I just feel I'm timing the ball just a little bit late - not as perfect as I'd like it to be. If I can get that going, hit more penetrating shots, I feel I can turn my game around."

American former world number one Andy Roddick after crushing Fabrice Santoro in opener: "I felt good. That's the best I've felt in four, five months. Something about this place always gets me energised."

Anne Keothavong after becoming the first British woman since 1991 to reach the third round at Flushing Meadows: "I guess it's a nice feeling just to get women's tennis out there. There are women out there who are doing things in British tennis and it's nice to know that it's just not Andy Murray. It's nice to be with him at these events and share it with him."
