Guinness Prem - Baron seeks to restore rugby's values

RFU chief executive Francis Baron has vowed to confront the sport's image crisis head on through the creation of a "heavyweight" task force.

Baron (pictured) declared "no stone would be left unturned" in the attempt to re-establish the sport's "core values" that he admitted have been damaged by a succession of scandals.

"It has been an immensely disappointing summer. The incidents that have happened have done damage to the game and its image," said Baron.

"Support for the game remains strong but fans don't like what has happened and expect something to be done about it. That is what we are doing and there will be no stone left unturned throughout the process."

'Bloodgate' took a fresh twist when the appeal testimony of wing Tom Williams exposed the extent of the pressure he was put under by club officials not to reveal the full details of the incident.

With the remaining judgments from the ERC's disciplinary process for the case expected to be published in full next week, further damning revelations are sure to emerge.

But the debacle at Harlequins is just one of a series of recent incidents that has left rugby's reputation in tatters.

A high-profile spate of eye-gouging, including by world-class players Sergio Parisse and Schalk Burger, the ensuing defence of rugby's most unforgivable offence by South Africa coach Peter de Villiers and the suspension of five Bath players for drug-related issues have also blighted the sport.

Baron added: "I'm setting up a heavyweight group of people. These are people covering different aspects of the game, experienced and very senior people.

"Everyone I've talked to feels the same way - we have got to re-establish in everybody's mind what the core values of our game are.

"Those values have made rugby union different and are things that our sponsors, TV partners and spectators buy into. If there has been slippage in some areas, and clearly there has been, we must make sure everybody is clear what those values are."

  1. 57 old farts , no 1 old fart.
    Heavyweight?
I assume Bruno Nero is on the panel to give the point of view of the convicted?
He is either there because he was guilty of buying/taking the marching powder or he was the subject of the unreasonable and arbitrary punishment of the RFU.
I would urge this panel to consider proportionality - if a player commits offence x in one competition in one part of the world the punishment should be the same everywhere else.

  4. Perhaps Francis Baron should actually review the laws of the game and get rid of the ruling that allow; uncontested scums or blood bin replacements, both of which are constantly abused by many clubs of all levels. Human beings have always been open to temptation, the easy solution is just remove it.

  6. I see taht they are now to curtail the investigation as it would damage the repuation of the game.

Well well so in effect we are rotten to the core but we won't make it public so that's all Ok again now.
