Premier League - Bruce unhappy with Bent

Eurosport - Mon, 28 Sep 09:00:00 2009

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce did not know whether to laugh or cry after seeing his side finally put Wolves to the sword in a 5-2 win.

2009-2010 Sunderland Steve Bruce - 0

The Black Cats were 2-0 up inside 48 minutes after Darren Bent and then, much to Bruce's annoyance, Kenwyne Jones converted penalties. But Wolves staged a concerted fightback and drew level before the Black Cats recovered to claim the points.

"I'm not feeling like we have won 5-2," said Bruce. "What he have to eradicate is when we have a wobble. We must have the basics within us to see that wobble through. Thankfully we saw it through."

Wolves would have felt hard done by to find themselves 2-0 down, but remarkably were back on level terms within seven minutes. First John Mensah put through his own goal and then Kevin Doyle blasted home an equaliser after goalkeeper Craig Gordon had handled Kieran Richardson's misplaced back-pass to concede a free-kick just six yards out.

But Jones then blasted home from distance to restore Sunderland's lead and Michael Turner's header and a Michael Mancienne own goal in injury time ensured the optimism among the travelling supporters was shortlived. However, as pleased as he was with the result, Bent's decision to surrender the second penalty to Jones did not please his manager.

"We have got one of the best penalty takers in the country in Darren, so that won't happen again, that's for sure," said Bruce.

"There would have been absolute hell to pay if he had missed. It's not right."

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy had no qualms about the second penalty decision, which was given for Christophe Berra's trip on Bent, but was not happy with referee Lee Mason's verdict for the first one, given for Segundo Castillo's tackle on the same man.

He said: "I have looked at it again and I think Segundo Castillo gets his foot on the ball, actually stops the ball and Bent falls over him.

"I don't think the referee had a great view of it and saw him fall over. I just think he has got to be certain. That wasn't fair on us, but the second one was a stonewaller."

  1. Jones' penalty was a good'un PWilson, he had his eyes on the keeper all the time & placed it when said keeper moved, wether he should've taken it is the point at hand.
I also beleive Fulop is better than Gordon in all aspects of goalkeeping but right now Gordon is the man between the sticks & he needs the backing of players & fans alike. Not much else he could've done with that ridiculous backpass from Show pony(tail) Richardson was there!?

You may well be right in saying Gordon needs confidence betweeen the sticks, But I dont believe he has what it takes to step up from the Scotish league to the EPL, nor do I beleive he is the best Scotland has.
There are many other supporters who dont come on here but sit in the stadium week after week and Cannot believe the basic errors of goalkeeping he makes. We used to have a brilliant goalkeeping coaching staff, who were let go by R K and havent been replaced. If you look at all the top big teams they have access to or on staff goalkeeping coaches who work with the keepers to improve their games. I Dont see this happening a SAFC trg sessions!!!
If Gordon became moore dominant with his defence then the defenders may have a bit more belief in him and wouldnt panic so much when pressurised into defending by the opposing teams, as was clearly highlighted on Sunday.

  3. Problem is that we have the most highly strung and superstious manager in the EPL, when it comes to pennas.
And bearing in mind Super Kenwyne's goal, it was a S*h*i*t*e penna(too close to the goalie) Whereas when Dazzler Bent takes them it doesn't matter what way the goalie dives, because they are pinged low and hard into the corners. And it's like Pat says, Brucie's obviously studied this in training and decided as the manager, Dazzler takes the better penna's, and judging form the weekend, who are we to argue.
ps: Flash is getting his confidence back between the sticks(and the recent Yorke statements at the weekend indicate this to be the case).

  5. Malcolm, sorry mate but I think you're wrong (comment 8). You talk about players needing confidence (and you're right in that respect of course) but confidence is exactly what Gordon needs now. Think of his injuries last season then losing his place to Fulop, coupled with the enormous price tag he has round his neck. He is a good keeper (a good Scottish keeper!) who in your own words, needs to be cut a bit of slack.
Also Bruce is right to have a go at Bent & Kenwyne - Brucie chooses his penalty taker.

  6. john i don't think he's making a bad job of things at all its going to take quite a while for all the new players to get used to playing with each other and as u said earlier he will make changes to the defence in the jan transfer window

  7. John im sure when you said "why did bent not want to take the pens" im sure you were trying to make it look like bent does not want to help Sunderland, was he thinking that when he scored the winner at bolton, the goal against chelsea and the equaliser at turf moor, plus the two at home vs hull city and the penalty early in the wolves match, im sure you will find your remark answerd.

OH........and on the subject, thought you did not care about Sunderland, yet had time to catch the game?

  9. JOHN last year against west brom jones was on a hattrick and we got a pen cisse wouldn't let jones take it and their partnership went down hill after that i think this will cement a better partnership between the two of them and if bruce actually watched when we got a pen instead of walking off down the tunnel he could of done something about it what really got up his nose was when he said on telly after the match that bent got a hattrick he didn't even know jones had taken it

  10. Bent is the club penalty taker & Jones is not, nice guy or not Bent should've taken the penalty, as he said on MotD he'll be taking them all from now on thanks to a rollocking from SB.

  11. because he has a good working relationship with jones and is a nice guy.

  12. It was agreed by the manager with the team that if a penalty was awarded, his best option to score would be Bent. The players went against this and so went against the managers decision.
You could argue that no harm was done because Jones scored but the question that needs to be asked is 'why did Bent not want to take the pen's' ?

    From john.connolly01, on Mon 28 Sep 8:29PM
  13. I cannot see what th problem is with Bent handing the ball to Jones to score from the spot?? if he had missed then that would have been different, he didn't and he scored boosting his confidence.
Football is a team effort and team work is important throughout the team, as Jones has shown when he comes back to defend. Come on Steve Bruce Cut them a bit of slack, they got the team out of a mess. Concentrate your effort and critisum to the defence!!!!!! i.e Richardsonn as Left Back and the goalkeeper.

  17. Bent was being a team player, and here's silly me thinking that kind of person was good for football. His action probably helped bring Jonesy out of the little dry run he'd found himself in. If they both continue to score I'll have no complaints.

  18. I can see Bruce's concern but he needs to handle this with tact. Bent has been a great boon to this club and he should appreciate a great player whois obviously a team player
