The popular left-hander was on sparkling form on the final day of the regular season-ending tournament, overhauling Tiger Woods with four birdies in seven holes on the front nine, before pulling away to win the $7.5 million event by three strokes.

The win also moved Mickelson - who took six weeks out earlier in the year to spend time with his wife Amy and his mother while they each received breast cancer treatment - up to third in the PGA Tour money list.

Mickelson takes over second place in the world rankings from Steve Stricker, despite his fellow American also having a good week at East Lake on his way to finishing sixth.

Kenny Perry, who held a two-shot lead heading into the final day, and Padraig Harrington move one spot up the rankings to fifth and seventh respectively.

They move ahead of Henrik Stenson, who was in Seve Trophy action with the Contentinental Europe team, and Sergio Garcia.
