Anglo-Welsh Cup permutations

Eurosport - Tue, 28 Oct 15:29:00 2008

There is all to play for on the final round of the Anglo-Welsh Cup this weekend, with Gloucester, Cardiff, Ospreys and Scarlets looking to maintain their 100 per cent records.

RUGBY - Nicky Robinson, Cardiff Blues - 0

The top teams from each of the four groups will qualify for the semi-finals.

Pool A

Sunday

Newcastle v Gloucester - 15:00

Wasps v Newport-Gwent Dragons - 15:00

Undefeated Gloucester need just two match points from their visit to Newcastle to secure a spot in the semi-finals for the first time. A draw or win will see them through.

If the Cherry and Whites lose and claim no bonus points, then Wasps will go through if they beat the Dragons. Conversely, if the Dragons beat Wasps with a bonus point, and Gloucester lose without a bonus point, then the Welsh region will go through.

Newcastle, who have lost both their games, cannot reach the semis.

Pool B

Friday

Cardiff Blues v Bath - 19:35

Leicester v Sale - 19:35

Cardiff will progress to the semi-finals if they secure a victory or draw against English league leaders Bath, who must beat the undefeated Welsh side and deprive them of any bonus points if they are to go through.

Leicester's slim chances rest on them beating Sale with a bonus point, along with Bath defeating Cardiff with neither side securing a bonus point.

In the case of a three-way tie at the top, with the Blues, Bath and Tigers all on nine points, the team that scores the most tries in the Cardiff v Bath game will reach the semi-finals.

Winless Sale have no chance of qualifying, even if they win at Welford Road.

Pool C

Sunday

London Irish v Ospreys - 15:00

Worcester v Harlequins - 15:00

A draw for the Ospreys at the Madejski Stadium will be enough to secure them top spot in Pool C.

Second-placed Worcester can reach the next round if they defeat Quins and the Ospreys gain nothing from their trip to London Irish.

The Exiles, currently third, still have a chance of going through. But they must beat the Ospreys and gain four more match points than the Welsh region, and at the same time Quins must beat the Warriors at Sixways.

If all three teams finish on nine points, Worcester can still qualify if the Ospreys are kept try-less.

Quins cannot progress, having already gone down in both their matches.

Pool D

Saturday

Bristol v Saracens - 14:30

Northampton v Scarlets - 14:30

Undefeated Scarlets must avoid defeat to reach the last four. But if the Saints down the Welsh side, then they will go through if Bristol also beat Sarries.

A three-way tie at the top on nine points would see the Scarlets - currently on eight points - progress courtesy of the bonus point they would have picked up at Franklin's Gardens.

Bristol are unable to qualify due to losses in their first two games.
