Wolverhampton Wanderers have signed Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne on loan until December 29.
The England Under-21 international stands a chance of going straight into Mick McCarthy's squad for Tuesday's Championship clash with Swansea.
McCarthy said: "We wanted some defensive cover, because we wanted to stop conceding goals at the rate we have - 14 in five games isn't good enough.
"Michael is a good defender and very quick. He is travelling up today and could be in the squad tomorrow.
"But I wouldn't want to throw him in without doing some work with him first."
Mancienne, 20, is no stranger to the Championship having spent most of the last two seasons on loan at QPR, making over 50 appearances for Rangers.

in regards to above comment by peter lineton ( telford) ive never read so much drivel if what he said was the case then what was the excuse with the reading game for as i recall hennessey was the no1 it that game and the defence was shakey, considering ikeme has not played many games i think he has been playing as good as any.in regards to bringing in mancienne then its all for the good , collins is better as a left back and having a proper cenre back in position will only strenghen the defense and give sterman a break.and also stop playing a striker (ward) as defense
Wolves may or may not need "defensive cover" as M.M. claims,to stop the defence leaking so many goals, but he has only himself to blame, Why relegate Hennessy to the subs bench for these last 4 games,Wayne missed a game during the international break,in comes Carl Ikeme as cover and McCarthy decides to keep him in the side for some reason. While Ikeme is not a bad keeper,he is not as good as Hennessy, and the Wolves defenders know this and play apprehensively, thus letting in silly goals, through lack of confidence. The sooner M.M. realises this the better, after all last season, although Wolves missed out on promotion, they had the third best defensive record in the Championship, with Hennessy as their No 1.... chelsea dont need defender they need striker anelka too bad and kalu cant play match
drogba must back or buy new striker or they will keep loose
This is an excellent move for both Michael and the Wolves. A very talented U21 England player and a very good Championship side. Hopefully Michael can help get the Wolves back into the Premier League and also gain valuable experience himself.
