CIS Cup - No problems for Rangers

Eurosport - Tue, 28 Oct 22:44:00 2008

Rangers, Dundee United and Falkirk all made home advantage count in winning through to the semi-finals of the Co-op Insurance Cup.

2008 Rangers Kris Boyd - 0

Hamilton travelled to Ibrox as rank underdogs so it came as little surprise when Rangers striker Kris Boyd continued his fine goalscoring form with the game's opener on 25 minutes.

In the second period Hamilton's bid to fight back into the contest was deflated when Kyle Lafferty's goal secured Walter Smith's side a place in the last four.

Veteran midfielder Neil McCann was on target in the 36th minute, as he scored the only goal as Falkirk beat Inverness 1-0 at The Falkirk Stadium.

Scott Robertson was the toast of the Dundee United faithful, as he broke from midfield to grab the game's only goal as Dunfermline failed to find a response at Tannadice Park.

  1. peter s, you're completely right, there's no point in even talking about rangers or celtic in the premership unless you think about the amount of money they would gain from simply being in it, they would be completely different teams, the fan base is definately there without a doubt, it's just money they lack to compete, and they would not belong in the championship, personally as a rangers fan i wouldn't even want them in the english prem..... and from the sounds of it neither does anyonelse

  2. The prem league's bubble has burst. It can only get worse for the english as it comes down to who pays for the tv rights and by the looks of it virgin are kickin sky's bolloc.ks at the moment and it wont be long before sky gets boycoted due to there high prices for a rubbish product. Also with HD getting bigger at the moment this is going to be sky's downfall. You can only send so much down a dish compared to limit less with virgin's fibre optic. So no Sky = NO MONEY

  3. Madmac - while Rangers were losing the UEFA cup final three out of the four Champions league semi-finalists were English teams and weren't the finalists bothe English clubs? Get your head out of the scottish mist and wake up to reality. Man Utd's anihillation of Celtic recently said it all. English football does not want Rangers or Celtic but they want us. Says it all really.

  4. CRAZY H: you forgot to mention that if the 5h1t hits the fan, they'll be offloading a lot of talent to other clubs to square off their debts! As a Celtic supporter, can I put the first bid in for Ronaldo? I'm prepared to pay the market rate - £5 down, then 50p a week for the mext 12 months!! LOL!!

  5. slapper commando - have u not watched european football over the last few years???? I think you will find rangers and celtice have done far better than any english team outwith the top four have or could have done! celtic beating milan when AC were at there best! Rangers getting to the uefa cup final, where were the english teams in the Uefa cup last year??????????????????????????????

  6. I cannot believe how naive these comments are. Obviously Rangers and Celtic would not have the current playing squads if they were in the EPL. e.g Alan hutton would not leave to go to spurs from Rangers if they played in the same league Spurs are nothing compared to Rangers in size. They would have access to the huge amounts of money available and they would be able to offer players games against man utd, chelsea etc instead of St Mirren which is also a problem when trying to attract players to Scotland. I do not know if ppl down south have any idea of the fan base the old firm have. Probably just behind Man u and Liverpool so in terms of marketing the rangers and celtic brand would be so strong, the english teams know this hence they do not want us there. Strange as their are welsh teams playing in their league but hey they do not threaten to rock their money boat.

  7. Doesn't really matter anyway - the Premiership is going to implode on itself soon anyway. The money involved - wages, transfer fee's - can't keep going up and its only a matter of time before a few clubs go bust...

  8. STEVIE B, like I have said the Scottish dynamic duo would be lucky to even get a mention in the Championship let alone the Premiership.......dream on guys.

  9. Agreed madmac, but you are addressing your comments to an ignorant sassenach! Funny how he never mentioned the fact that for years, English clubs raided Scotland for cheap players! Now that the SPL clubs have wised-up, they need to put real money on the table. Monopoly money is no longer currency here!

From Singin' Ginger!!, on Wed 29 Oct 8:09AM
  10. yes you are correct, but this is the CIS cup the article is about, and anybody can win a cup competition as has been proved he last few years.

O and about your comment about the english league, rangers and celtic would be a premiership side, do you know that rangers and celtic get one million pounds for tv rights and one million for winning the league, compared to minimum 20 million tv rights for bottom clubs in premiership and 20million for the winner scaled down.

imagine how good rangers and celti would be with that kinda money!!!

From madmac, on Wed 29 Oct 7:56AM
  11. In the SPL there shall really only be 2 challengers for the title. I need not name them. Having said that, they would be lucky to be in the Championship if they were part of England's soccer league.
