Tony Adams has been confirmed as the new manager of Portsmouth, three days after the departure of Harry Redknapp to Tottenham Hotspur.

2008 Portsmouth Tony Adams - 0

The 42-year-old Adams served as an assistant to Redknapp, who was back in Portsmouth on Tuesday to receive the freedom of the city.

Adams was told on Monday night that he would be given the job and take charge for Wednesday's Premier League meeting with Liverpool.

The former Arsenal captain signed a two-and-a-half year contract until the end of the 2010/11 season.

He said: "It's a great opportunity and one I'd be mad to turn down. I'm very excited, I can't wait to get going.

"I've been here for two-and-a-half years so it was business as usual this morning, except Harry's charm and fun was gone.

"I've got some great players at Portsmouth and I have been kind of responsible as well for helping Harry to bring them to the club.

"I was at home thinking, 'I don't want anyone else to get this job'."

Adams conceded he might come under pressure from Redknapp's Tottenham to sell players such as Jermain Defoe and Lassana Diarra, but pledged: "I'll fight him!

"That's why they are here - they're good players and he'll probably want them.

"We've got some very good players here at the club so I'm delighted that other clubs want them. But it's my job to keep them here."

Adams also said he had spoken to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger before accepting his first Premier League management job.

"I spoke to Arsene [Wenger] last night for some advice, and he said, 'Welcome to hell!'"

Adams did not confirm the imminent appointment of his former Arsenal team-mate Martin Keown as assistant manager, saying he intended to take his time.

Joe Jordan and Paul Groves remain part of the coaching set-up.

Chairman Peter Storrie refused to answer questions about the club's uncertain finances, describing them as "a boring, boring subject".

  1. If you have had your share of glory and are sick of the "BIG" 4 get behind HULL great to see another outsider coming to the fore.............

United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, we are sick of you!

  2. The problem for Portsmouth is not Harry Redknapp leaving but their financial situation. Redknapp was able to spend many tens of millions of pounds on players, some of them expensive flops, and wages. No wonder the club has been transformed over the last few years, no Pompey manager in the past ever had any money to work with but Redknapp, with customary arrogance, likes to take all the plaudits. Now Tony Adams may be faced with losing top players because the club need the money and he will probably get the negative criticism if the club declines somewhat while Harry will take the credit for the few 'glory years'. Harry is shrewd if nothing else.

  5. Pompey is up for sale, and will be bought by some billionaire before long. He will want his own man as manager - so Harry and Tony Adams would be out. I think Harry knew that and it is one of the reasons he left. Gaydamak has lost a fortune in the recent slump, and Pompey are £35m(?) in the red. Go figure....

  6. Losing Harry is a blow but not a devastation. I am sure Tony Adams and Joe Jordan will do their best for the club. There is no questioning Harry's ability but his eye for the "main chance" is always evident. What has really annoyed me about the comments on this article are the mindless morons that seem to think it's funny to attack Tony Adam's ancient drinking problems - get a life, people!

  7. I don't like Harry Redknapp. I'm not a Pompey supporter or a Spurs supporter, but it doesn't change my view of the man. He is a crooked self important Delboy of a man. His record with honesty and integrity have never been the best, so it came as no surprise when he turned tail and ran a few days before accepting the freedom of the city at Portsmouth. He never turned Newcastle down, as he says he did, because he was never offered the job. He went for the interview though. That must tell you something.

Good luck to Pompey. I hope Tony Adams does well. I hope he does better than Harry.

  10. you ant be a pompey fan, HARRY won you boys the FA cup and saved you from relegation two seasons ago, when everyone wrote you off. if it werent for him, you would have ended up like Leeds United, in massive debt, and no rich owner that is backing you now.

hate fans like you, just appreiciate him for what he did, same with Westham fans

  11. I don't think Pompey had any choice really but to name Adams as manager, Harry goes off to Spurs and because of Adams' Arsenal connection he was never going to follow him, so what do you do ? bring in a new manager from elsewhere who brings in his own staff and inefect, Adams & Jordan would most probably have been up the road.

I've read a lot of the comments and agree that Adams has got to get it right early on i think he'll do ok up until christmas but the big question thereafter is can he hang onto the players Harry took to Portsmouth ? come January i expect a few managers to be knocking on Pompey's door and first in the queue will be Mr Redknapp.

    It will be interesting.

makes you laugh about going to liverpool , the other day all was saying chelsea will beat liverpool guess what as you know they lost , pompey will get something at liverpool a point or a win we lost heavy under the great harry and his football thinking i believe tony and joe will do us proud on weds night , and you scum you wont even be in the championship next season so again you are so brain deaD BUT THAT GOES WITH THE THIEVES IN YOUR CLUB ALSO , YOUR DOOMED SCUM

  14. As a Pompey fan I was all for a complete change in management structure after Harry left us again. Harry's success has stretched our clubs finances to beyond what we can justify; anyone who want's to talk about shrewd business need only look at the £15 million we invested on Utaka and Nugent. He has bulked out our squad with distinctly average players on high wages, who are complimented by a backbone of quality. Our chances ended when we lost Muntari, not Harry, his tactics are erratic and relied solely on the opposition being unable to test our ageing back line - you need look no further than the Man City, Chelsea and Braga matches for examples where this backfired spectacularly.

There's no doubt Adams deserves his chance, and hopefully he can implement a few new ideas particularly for our defense, which has been at 6's and 7's all season. There's no doubt that there are a lot of players at the club who played for Harry only, but frankly they are more than welcome to have him - after all it was Harry who slapped the over-inflated prices on their heads, so now if he wants 'em he's going to have to pay. If they want Johnson, we'll take Hutton, if they want Diarra, we'll have Huddleston, Defoe, Be... forget it, we'll keep Defoe!

We may be up the creak, but its not the first time and it wont be the last. Pompey is all about the club; players and managers come and go, some more memorable than others, but whatever happens we support Portsmouth regardless of their successes and failures. Harry is no more important in my eyes than Terry Fenwick or Alan Perrin; the only way he could have changed that is by honouring his contract, but it was never going to happen, just as it won't with Tottenham. Good luck to Tony Adams and que sara sara, it's going to be an interesting old season after all!

  16. I THINK THAT ADAMS AND JORDAN CAN BE A GOOD COMBINATION FOR PORTSMOUTH,THEY KNOW THE PLAYERS AT THE CLUB AND WHERE THE WEAKNESS MAY BE,FOR EXAMPLE RIGHT MIDFIELD,WE HAVE NEVER REPLACED STONE.THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO SORT OUT THE FINANCIAL POSITION,OUR WAGE BILL IS TOO HIGH AND THIS IS BECAUSE HR ONLY BROUGHT EXPERIENCED PLAYERS ON HIGH WAGES TO THE CLUB,WE NEED MORE PLAYERS LIKE LINVOY AND HUGHESY AT THE CLUB,THEY HAVE NEVER LET US DOWN.
HR WILL SOON SORT SPURS ,THEY HAVE SOME GOOD PLAYERS,KEEPER LOOKS SUSPECT ,LETS HOPE ITS NOT GOODBYE TO JAMES IN JANUARY-THIS COULD BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE FOR POMPEY.

  18. Good luck to Adams.
Yes,he's messed-up in the past;(haven't we all?),but he's held his hands up,taken the flak & got his life back together.
I'm no Pompey fan,but after that disloyal, corrupt chancer Benttwat packed his bags for the bright lights, they deserve some stability & continuety.

  20. Wrong "Slivatree", Tony Adams has been @ Pompey 4 four years or so, and has done a pretty good job, at least with the defenders and midfielders. With Him and Joe Jordan together - who has done an excellent job 4 Pompey too -they'll be alright, at least 'til end of Season or if they decide to go for a new man like Avram "Rant" or Alan Curbishley.

    Pompey Tone.
