Carling Cup - City put five past Scunthorpe

Eurosport - Wed, 28 Oct 20:45:00 2009

Manchester City thrashed Scunthorpe United 5-1 to advance serenely through to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup at the City of Manchester Stadium.

A crowd of 36,358 turned out for the fourth-round match as Mark Hughes named a strong side with just four changes from the 2-2 draw with Fulham at the weekend, and his players produced a performance to match.

Stephen Ireland gave the hosts the lead in just the third minute of the match with a clinical finish before Jonathan Forte grabbed an equaliser against the run of play in the 26th minute.

Roque Santa Cruz, handed a starting berth alongside Carlos Tevez in attack, restored City's lead with a deft header in the 38th minute before Joleon Lescott rose majestically to head the hosts' third 10 minutes into the second half.

Tevez, who later departed to a standing ovation, capped a typically wholehearted display with a sharp finish from close range in the 71st minute, before a rasping shot from substitute Michael Johnson six minutes later made it five.

In a frantic opening to the match, it was Scunthorpe who made the faster start with Paul Hayes executing a sharp swivel and shot from the edge of the hosts' box with Shay Given forced to make a smart save down low to his right.

But just a minute later, Ireland broke the deadlock as Grant McCann was caught napping in midfield and the Irishman pounced to open the scoring with an exquisite curled finish.

The midfielder then slipped in Shaun Wright-Phillips down the left five minutes later, but the winger skewed his shot wide from a tight angle when he really should have at least tested Joe Murphy in the Scunthorpe goal.

City continued to have the better of the play, but were left stunned when Marcus Williams bustled his way down the left and played the ball across to Forte who stroked the ball into the far corner of Given's net to restore parity for the visitors.

Hayes, who was pushed up alongside Forte by Irons boss Nigel Adkins midway through the half, had a free header in the box after he latched on to Michael O'Connor's through ball, but his effort was tame and straight at the keeper on the half-hour mark.

Pablo Zabaleta produced a marauding run down the right, helped by an ill-timed slip by Hayes, and the Argentine clipped in a pin-point cross to Santa Cruz whose precise header beat Joe Murphy as the Paraguayan restored his side's lead in the 38th minute.

Santa Cruz almost grabbed his second in the 55th minute but his stabbed shot from inside the Scunthorpe box was parried away superbly by Murphy following Wright-Phillips's through ball.

Lescott then capitalised on some lax defending from the Championship side as he rose imperiously a minute later to give City a two-goal cushion with a powerful header past Murphy.

Ireland received a huge ovation as he departed in the 59th minute and 19-year-old Vladimir Weiss replaced the goalscorer with Hughes keen to preserve some of his key players in the second half.

Tevez was rewarded for his laborious efforts throughout with a goal of his own in the 71st minute as he slid in to steal the fourth from close range after Weiss whipped the ball across at pace.

The 21-year-old Johnson replaced Gareth Barry in the 72nd minute; shortly after got himself on the scoresheet with an emphatic strike from the edge of the penalty area to comprehensively beat Murphy and make it five.

The final 15 minutes petered out as both sides made their full allocation of substitutions, but the healthy crowd at the City of Manchester Stadium gave their side a warm reception as they closed out a convincing victory.

You are both spot on with your excellent comments concerning those two armchair Rag Scum glory supporting morons "dazmanutd & vegasmufc", I like you have also noticed over many months that these two Rag Scum pretenders have become absolutely obsessed with every thread on here concerning Manchester City Football Club, the pair seem to be more interested in whats going on at Eastlands than whats not going on at the Swamp which also tells you that they are at their wits end with worry and in complete and total awe with what is happening at Manchester's one and only Football Club.
As for knocking our attendance at last nights Carling Cup game with Scunthorpe, if either of these two brain-dead, moronic armchair Arsewipes had used their sh@t for brains and checked out the stats from this stage of the Carling Cup ties, they would have seen the pure fact that Eastlands housed the 2nd highest attendance of the whole round which is something the Swamp can't boast about in their last few Champs League Games and especially against the German Champions Wolfsberg.

  4. cant stop laughing at the Juvenile lame brain United fans that keep popping up on the city sites. In fact having read what they have to say, you are not surprised to hear they are beating up girls, trashing and robbing foot outlets at Barnsley, who by the way, could teach them a thing or two about how to behave at a football match! Mind you if they have the mentality of that plonker Neville, then again not surprised! City are a team on the up and it is a matter of when, not if, that we get amongst the top four and ruin there cartel. Grow up little boy united fans and leave the comments to adult united fans, who understand the game far better.

  5. C'mon lads n lasses, the swamp dwellers have to vent their spleen somewhere especially after their 2-0 'drubbing' of Barnsley. What with Baconface on an FA charge, animalistic fans terrorising 17 year old girls while stealing food and money and Gladys Neville (Captain Kamakaze) collecting a straight red for his dirty 'studs-up' challenge they have to try and deflect attention elsewhere.

  6. Before they call City fans maybe they should look at the scum who terrified women at Oakwell "Two men aged 22 and 24 were arrested for public order offences, a 26 year-old-man was arrested for theft and a 32-year-old man was arrested for throwing a missile onto a football pitch. All four men are from Manchester."

  8. No surprise to see VEGAS still shouting all over City messageboards. I've never come across a rag so obsessed with the neighbours. Does anyone else agree that he is the single most stupid scum fan in the entire world, or does someone know someone even less intelligent? Remember, to be more stupid than VEGAS, you have to be unable to find the Caps Lock key on your keyboard...... although let's face it, he's so dumb he probably couldn't find his own needledick with both hands and a torch.
