Premier Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty dismissed Warren Gatland's criticism of the Guinness Premiership as a "cheap shot".
McCafferty believes the Wales coach's comments have been motivated by his frustration at the unavailability of Sale scrum-half Dwayne Peel for the autumn opener against New Zealand as Gatland - who masterminded three league titles and a Heineken Cup crown during three years as Wasps' director of rugby - on described the Premiership as the weakest he has seen.
"It was a pretty cheap shot I thought," McCafferty told BBC Radio 5 Live. "The fact is attendances are up 17 per cent this year and one particular match - Saracens against Northampton at Wembley - saw more supporters there than in the entire Celtic League."
Peel is the solitary Premiership player in the Wales squad for the autumn Tests but he is set to miss the curtain raiser against the All Blacks on November 7.
The match is being staged outside the recognised International Rugby Board autumn Test window, so Sale are under no obligation to release him.
Peel's probable absence takes on added significance given that Ospreys number nine Mike Phillips is sidelined for around 12 weeks with a serious ankle injury.
"What's going on underneath is that Wales have organised an extra international themselves," added McCafferty.
"They know full well they don't have the ability to call up players from outside of Wales on a compulsory basis so I think maybe there's a bit of feeling about that."
Gatland was emphatic in his dismissal of the Premiership and claimed the poor standard would have repercussions at international level.
"I think the Guinness Premiership, having watched the games, is the weakest Premiership I've seen since I have been up here (in the United Kingdom)," he said. "It is the weakest in terms of the quality of the teams involved."

joe b, if its true what you say why did gavin henson ask not to be paid whilst he's out with injury, also why hasn't eurosport reported on this yet, they only write about him when he's doing something wrong so they can get a slagging match on this forum
mutleyp, Peel has already decided where he wants to play and has chsoen Sale. That will quite simply be an economic decision based on a relatively short career path, these guys need to accrue as much money as possible when they can. Playing for country is without doubt the highest honour and I am sure everyone wants to do it, however Rugby is their job and they need to earn where they can. Peel was not getting chosen regularily so his move to Sale had less "risk". The only reason Gatland is moaning is because his first choice is not available.
No-one can balme players for trying to get the highest salary they can for their job to look after their families etc, I know I always want more. Perhaps he would still be in Wales in a Welsh club had matched the Sale offer but they did not and that's business.
What would you rather do - a job at company A for say £20,000 per year or the same job at company B for £60,000?
yip look at it logically with or without peel or philips wales wont beat new zealand im australian and as much as i hate the kiwis they will dominate the game and win 56 years since wales last beat the kiwis and it is soon gona change to 57, n.z could name a second teir team and challenge any nation to a good game of rugby and that solely cause of the depth they have in every position wales will faulter
look at it logically, if it t'werent for Mike Phillips being injured, then Peel wouldnt even have a look in, so its a problem thats come of consequence. On the one hand, Gatland is right, the premiership so far has been a shadow of what it was last year (best club competition last year by far) but on the other hand, why even say it?
before the six nations? its mind-games then. but before the autumn ints.? it could be a complete case of mis-interpreted journalism of course, maybe Warren just said he was disappointed by the games so far. but hes got no need to get involved with it
peel knew when he signed for sale that there was a possibility he would'nt be released for autumn tests, im a huge peel fan but it is really his own fault for playing outside of wales, the wru has only just sorted it out with the 4 regions to have players released a fortnight before the first test.
You'll find there ARE play-offs for the Celtic League this season!!!!! As for play-offs I understand they are there to help teams who lose top players during the 6 Nations campaign. Personally, if we had a smaller Premiership and maybe divide it into two divisions of 8, we wouldn't need play-offs as fewer games might allow a mid-season break during the 6 Nations. Thoughts? And the Celtic League is weak. The top teams dismiss it by fielding weak teams during the Heiniken Cup. Only Newport and Connacht take the Celtic League seriously as the fight for the Wooden Spoon each year!
Mccafferty sounds like a whining little child, ask Dwayne Peel where he would rather be playing that day and i bet his answer would be Cardiff! I am sure attendances are up 17% in the premiership, but i would rather have lower attendances and a fair result in the table (Like the Celtic League) with the side who finish on top of the table actually being crowned the champions rather than play offs to boost the premierships coffers (and possibly a side who finished 4th in the table being crowned as champions!) Absurd!!!
Mark McCafferty what a w-a-n-k-e-r the Premiership is the weakest of the lges this season
Since when did a @#$% little organisation in the north of England take preference over an International Rugby match. Sale (or any other Guinness club) would need 6 games to draw 75,000 spectators. Any who is this McCafferty anyway ? What he ever done in Rugby ? Sounds like a spiteful @#$% to me.
