Three late goals could not prevent Burnley from suffering a 5-3 defeat at the hands of West Ham in the Premier League at Upton Park.
First-half goals from Jack Collison, Junior Stanislas and Carlton Cole effectively saw Gianfranco Zola's side pull away from the lower echelons of the table as the visitors' shoddy defending was punished.
Guillermo Franco made it four shortly after half-time, with substitute Luis Jimenez adding a fifth with the hosts' second penalty as Burnley endured a torrid afternoon and their pitiful away record was further exacerbated.
Steven Fletcher then netted a consolation brace within six minutes to reduce the deficit as West Ham's defence became crippled with complacency, but the damage had already been inflicted.
Steven Caldwell was shown a straight red card for hauling down jet-heeled substitute Zavon Hines in stoppage time, but it had little bearing on an already emphatic result - as did Chris Eagles's tap-in for Burnley's third a minute later.
Owen Coyle's side have now increased their goals-against tally to 25 in six matches on the road, and have now not beaten the Hammers in their last 10 meetings in all competitions.
Collison was sprightly throughout from his midfield berth wide on the right, and he opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a clinical finish past Brian Jensen from Scott Parker's quick free-kick.
Parker skippered the side in Matthew Upson's absence and the midfielder was typically industrious as he won an attacking throw which led to the second goal on 34 minutes.
Jonathan Spector found Franco on the edge of the Burnley area and he chested the ball down exquisitely before finding Stanislas in space. The winger's initial effort was parried by Jensen, but only back into his path - and he made no mistake with the follow-up.
The contest was effectively extinguished two minutes before half-time as Cole - minutes after sustaining a knock - dispatched a penalty following Spector's surging run into the box which saw Robbie Blake haul down the defender.
Burnley started the match the brighter with a promising spell of possession, but the Hammers were rewarded for their direct and potent breaks, mainly through Stanislas and Collison.
Zola seized the opportunity to make changes at half-time with his side in complete command, and the Italian introduced Hines to replace the injury-stricken Cole.
In the 51st minute, Stephen Jordan up-ended Collison and Stanislas made the visitors' afternoon even more difficult from the resulting free-kick.
The 19-year-old whipped over a devilish delivery which left Clarke Carlisle and Caldwell flat-footed, and Franco rose to head home from close range.
Burnley substitute David Nugent should have reduced the arrears on the hour-mark after he stole in behind Danny Gabbidon, but headed wide of Robert Green's near post from Graham Alexander's pinpoint cross.
West Ham were much more clinical and, after another marauding run and through ball from Parker, Jimenez - just minutes after coming on as a substitute - drew a rash challenge from Jensen to win the second spot kick.
The Chilean picked himself up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way, just as Cole had before him, with the visiting fans streaming out of the exits.
Fletcher then made his mark with two opportunist strikes from a combined distance of about 15 yards as winger Eagles whipped over two incisive crosses from the left which scythed through the hosts' defensive line.
Hines would be entitled to feel aggrieved after having two blatant penalty appeals rejected by Chris Foy, but the referee perhaps felt he had awarded his full allocation for the afternoon.
Caldwell, who tripped Hines for the second vociferous appeal, was shown the red card by Foy in stoppage time after tugging the shirt of the same player, before Eagles grabbed a third goal from close range to give the scoreline a misleading appearance.
The victory was only West Ham's second at Upton Park in this Premier League campaign, and it enables Zola's side to pull away from Bolton, who are now two points adrift in 18th spot.

West Ham would be in the top half of the table if Collins and Neal were still at the club. Bad business with more to come if the rumours are right.
From this match,
1. Spector is a better choice as Right defender.
2. Faubert is good when he plays an attacking role. He has pace and good attacking mind.
3. The defence is poor to concede 3 goals within 35 mins, but it's lucky that we win this game and hope that we can improve in the match vs Man U. My suggestion is playing with Spector, Upson, Gabbidon, Illunga when Upson returns from injury. Da Costa is good in attacking, but still need time to improve in defending and cooperation with other defenders.
Jimenez is not the worst player, but I agree that he is the worst attacking options in current West Ham squad. No need to compare with him with Franco and Cole, Diamanti is a free-kick specialist, which can give treat to the opponent when there is a free-kick within shooting range, Hines has a lot to improve, but his pace can cause trouble to opponent's defence, Caldwell's red card is a good example. Up to this match, I still cannot find the threat from Jimenez, except the penalty received. Hope he can improve after scored his first premiership goal.
Come on guys. Are you West Ham or not. Keep the faith we always will be great. Sticky patches shown the mark of real men!!!
nice to see Fletchers still banging in the goals down south-he's proving alot of people wrong! Well done Fletcher all the best from the hibs boys!
Come away from the match feeling like we lost???? what i think might not be shown so here goes- defence are @#$%!! @#$%!!! poo!!!. jimineze is @#$%!!! @#$%!!! poo!!! zolas team going forward are ok!!!! but clarks defence are an a embarassment as to what he did or had at chelsea??? might be time to call in an expert coach to sort the defence out??? jimineze just dont cut it???what ever his hair style might be or is??? he does not have what we need as a player.BRING ON THE WALL!!!!!!!!!!!!
How long you been a West Ham supporter then R? Saying Jeminez is the worst player ever to play for us means it canīt be long. Also why you expect Zola to be all bluster at Post match interviews is a loke. What negative feelings he has for his players are best left to the privacy of the changing room and not for others entertainment. You can be assured that if we were unhappy with certain players performances he too was.
Our team seems to be turned ar5e about head this season, last season we were quite solid in defence but lacked goals up front, this season itīs the other way round. It was a big mistake to sell Collins but that canīt be blamed on Zola, he does how ever seem to make some strange tactical decisions the reason behind them only he knows and we can guess at, some might be through having to and not choice.
What ever i am 100% behind him and am happy with the win. I donīt fancy our next game against Man Utd though with the defence performing as it has.
you will still go down .
Watched the last 30min and seriously think we may get relegated!. 5 goals up and I was still worried about Burnley. They went for are throats and it could have been 5 - 5!!. We cannot defend crosses, green looks like he is going to cry and NEVER comes out for crosses. Spector..love watching him chase shadows, Hines & Stanlis..lightweights, Jimenez is a JOKE!!..he never tracks back, cant tackle, cant pass bloody useless, this guy may be one of worst players ever to grace upton park. He is concerned more about the latest hairstyles. Zola has to go before its to late, his signings ,letting players go (collins) tactics, formations, subs, half team team talks, after match reviews (try listening to this fool talking in his broken english). I hate Zola
5-0 Whoa! The mighty 'ammers? Beginning to look like a proper football team?
1,2,3 'ave that! Another 10 minutes and they'd have lost.
Get 'em down to where they belong.
how do you go 5-0 up in a game, and still manage to concede 3?????
wtf! get it together hammers
go hammers from a Chelsea fan
I agree that Hammer "MUST WIN GAME". Loss to Burley at home is really not a good experience. I disagree with Zola that he satisfied after 'crazy' clash with Hull, Away at Hull is also a must win game with 2-0 in 13 mins. Hope hammer can concentrate in this game and get 3 points to climb up in the table.
3 words "MUST WIN GAME" if we don't win this one we deserve to go down.Come on HAMMERS give your long suffering supporters something to crack a smile over. If we lose this game a lot of people inthe HAMMERS set up need to take a good long look at themselves.
