Premier League - Wigan bounce back with win

PA Sport - Sat, 28 Nov 17:08:00 2009

Wigan produced the ideal response to last week's 9-1 thrashing by Tottenham as Hugo Rodallega's goal earned them a 1-0 win over Sunderland in the Premier League.

2009-2010 Wigan Athletic Hugo Rodallega - 0

Former Latics boss Steve Bruce's return to the DW Stadium was an unhappy one as the striker he signed 10 months ago inflicted a fifth away defeat of the campaign.

The Black Cats barely threatened throughout and after Wigan's Jason Scotland hit the post in the first half Rodallega's sixth league goal of the season decided the contest.

Manager Roberto Martinez showed his ruthless side in his team selection, with left-back Erik Edman dropped from the squad completely after his horror show against Aaron Lennon at White Hart Lane.

And his players started brightly, Rodallega diverting Charles N'Zogbia's cross into the side-netting and Paul Scharner shooting low at goalkeeper Marton Fulop.

At the other end Emmerson Boyce produced a perfectly-judged tackle to deny Darren Bent just as he looked certain to score past goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

Midway through the half Wigan were unlucky not to take the lead when N'Zogbia dispossessed Paulo da Silva on the right of the penalty area and crossed for Scotland to hit a first-time shot which beat Fulop but rebounded back off the post.

Fulop then saved his team-mate Michael Turner's blushes, producing a brilliant finger-tip save to tip the centre-back's header from Rodallega's inswinging free-kick around the upright.

Martinez replaced Scotland with Jordi Gomez soon after the break, pushing Rodallega into a central position. And the move paid off in the 76th minute when when Scharner's ball forward put Rodallega up against Da Silva.

The Paraguay international made a mess of his challenge, falling to the floor, and the Wigan striker skipped past him to roll a left-footed shot past Fulop from a tight angle and into the far corner.

  2. Firstly, lets not give any credence to the three idiots who are involved in the police investigation and dont use it to start off stupid rumours.
Why did none of your Stewards intervene??? the three should have been ejected at the very least. As for the third rate club in the north east?? well your geography needs to improve as well Midllesboro are a small club and are not really part of the N/east at all As for the other club you mentioned, well S/land is a bigger city than Newcastle and has a bigger fan base and following all over the country and in europe as well as we often get fans from Norway and Holland coming over to watch games.
I agree we were righlty beaten by your team because we didnt play well at all no excuses for that we were beaten so hopefully we will address this and put it right for Fulham next week

  4. Another inept away day display, not good enough by any player involved, too many 'big time charlies' only up for the 'big' teams, SB must take some blame too, playing 1 up front against a team that has just shipped 9 goals is criminal! Need to do better against teams like this, especially away from home.

  6. Graham, 3rd city?? Maybe you should look up and see which is the biggest city if you can even read. I haven't mentioned Europe but since you did, I can tell you that Sunderland's chances of getting there are slightly more than the Skunks are. Unless you get off the dole, stop buying Gregg's pasties and get a cheapie to Majorca. Oh man, I would love to get the unwashed fat Geordies in the FA Cup draw tomorrow. Home or away !!!! Then we will see who has the better team.

  10. I'm not one for saying i told you so but.....................

Heres why I know Wigan will win, Sunderland have had some good results against depleted top 4 sides, its all very well parking the bus against these teams then nicking a lucky (or illegal as has been the case) goal up the other end but the Sunderland players then become arrogant and complacent against the lower placed teams, presuming they will win and therefore putting in half the effort and ending up being passed off the park by the likes of Birmingham. They will argue the point on here and call me anti mackem but ive already had this view off several mackems, they see the players as unprofessional prima donnas and regularly chastise the management for not dealing with it. Yes sir, the SAFC faithful are not happy and are beginning to turn on poor old Brucie, who's starting to resemble a deer in the headlights - he hasnt been this high up the table since his united days and word on the street is he's unsettled and ready for (yet)another club. REMEMBER - YOU READ IT HERE FIRST.

This is brilliant, i'm like a clairvoyant.....

  11. bad result today knew it would be quite a hard game and again we ddint remain focussed and keep the defence tight. The Midfeild has to start to contibute towards scoring goals to asssist the forwards, especially when bent is not 100% fit. get them in for extra finishing trg must have a better perfprmance at Fulham next week. Not good enough today Wigan did what they needed to do ,

  13. more quality entertainment from the makems. after arsenal it was 'europe for definate' and 'we can challenge the top 4' during this week i thought the safc fans at work had started supporting barcelona or real madrid after some of the claims they made about their team. turns out they were all still supporting a team from north easts 3rd city. QUALITY! please keep it coming lads

  15. Can't believe that Wigan won. This non entity of a club being in the Premier League is a joke itself but Sunderland failed to beat this tin pot side so I suppose credit must go to them. Still a joke that Wigan, Hull, Bolton, Fulham, Birmingham, Portsmouth, Stoke and Burnley are in this league when bigger clubs are languishing in lower divisions.
