Premier League - Fulham deny Arsenal at Emirates
Both goals came in a second half that Arsenal dominated, the Belgium defender mis-kicking past his own keeper on 65 minutes but atoning with a powerful header 17 minutes later.
Fulham, meanwhile, move to 15th, three points clear of the relegation zone.
A moderately entertaining first half was surprisingly even as Fulham created almost as many opportunities as their hosts.
Ramsey put in a bad miss, ballooning over after excellent play by the livewire Theo Walcott, who himself forced a good stop by Schwarzer after electing to shoot from wide.
Andre Santos displayed the best piece of skill in the half as he turned Fulham inside out on the left, but he was unable to find a final ball to match, while the trading of chances continued as Moussa Dembele had an effort deflected wide by Vermaelen.
Hangeland headed wide again from a similar position but the best opportunity of the half fell to Arsenal right at the end, Per Mertescker flicking a header wide from Mikel Arteta’s free-kick.
While the first half was closely contested, the second half was all Arsenal in terms of attacking endeavour, although Fulham emerged with great credit for their defensive display.
Hangeland and Schwarzer almost collided when trying to clear a Walcott cross, Chris Baird cleared off the line after Van Persie wriggled into a goal-scoring position, with the Dutchman falling in the box after a poor first touch and somewhat lucky not to be booked for simulation.
But Fulham occasionally countered with pace, and Arsenal were given a strong warning when Dempsey kicked air from close range after a wicked bending cross from Murphy.
But the Gunners failed to heed that warning and, from another high Murphy ball, John Arne Riise ghosted in to control with his chest - sliding in, Vermaelen’s attempted clearance flew past Szczesny for a 65th-minute lead.
Zamora had a fine finish disallowed for offside soon afterwards but Arsenal regrouped and completely dominated the closing stages.
On 74 minutes, Djourou met a wonderful Arteta corner with a booming header that Schwarzer acrobatically clawed away, a remarkable stop given it was already past him when he readjusted.
Van Persie blasted over from a good position following excellent work by substitute Gervinho on the left, and finally the Gunners drew level just afterwards.
Walcott - who along with Andre Santos and Gervinho was Arsenal’s main threat - raced down the right and put over a wicked cross that Vermaelen flew in to head into the ground, the power sending it bouncing into the top left with Schwarzer left helpless.
With eight minutes remaining that catalysed an Arsenal onslaught - but for all their endeavour they could not find a way past Schwarzer and co. with Van Persie hitting the side netting before heading straight at the Australia keeper with a diving header at the death.
Fulham held out for a brilliant point, while Arsenal return to training in the knowledge that they are still only second in recent form to runaway leaders Manchester City.
