Gary McDonald's brace earned Oldham a superb 2-0 victory over promotion-chasing Carlisle for their first home league win in four months. The 25-year-old Scot came up with a smart finish in the 21st minute after some good build-up play by Kelvin Lomax and Chris Taylor.
Midfielder McDonald hit high-flying Carlisle again with a close-range header from a superb Neal Eardley cross two minutes before the break.
But he missed the chance to net a hat-trick after racing clear into the box in the 66th minute only to drag his shot wide.
Carlisle, third from top, could not get into the contest and failed to test Latics' veteran goalkeeper Mark Crossley.
The Cumbrians are now without a win away from home in eight games after another lacklustre display and have failed to score in the last five.
