Rangers defender Alan Hutton is set to join Spurs, and his exit from Ibrox could spark a spending spree.Gers manager Walter Smith is expected to be handed a chunk of the £9million fee Tottenham are ready to pay for the Scotland right-back.
The funds will allow Smith to follow Celtic's lead by bringing in new faces before the transfer window closes on Thursday.
Smith has already identified several targets, and if Daniel Cousin's £3million move to Fulham is also completed before the deadline he could make a striker his priority.
Aston Villa striker Luke Moore is a player Smith is known to be interested in, and the £3.5million asking price may not be prohibitive if the Hutton deal proceeds smoothly.
Hutton is expected to complete his transfer to Tottenham shortly, with Rangers having admitted earlier this month that the money was too good to refuse.
They supported Hutton when he decided to reject the transfer initially, however the Scotland right-back's anticipated move could allow Rangers to strengthen their squad in several departments.
Smith is determined to bring in a new goalkeeper to replace Roy Carroll, who is waiting to complete his move to Derby. Grzegorz Szamotulski, whose Dundee United contract expires this week, is an option.
But Rangers could also seek a new left-back if Hutton goes, with Steven Whittaker primed to switch flanks to take over on the right side of defence.
Rangers may have defenders Andy Webster and Steven Smith back in first-team contention towards the end of next month after their long injury breaks.
Webster has made just one competitive appearance since joining Rangers on loan from Wigan 12 months ago, while Smith has not been involved since December 2006.
They featured in a behind-closed-doors game against Dumbarton on Monday and should face Kilmarnock reserves next week.
Rangers coach Tommy Wilson revealed both men did well against Dumbarton.
Wilson told the club's official website: "You would never have known Stevie and Andy had been away and we were very pleased with how they both did."
He added: "It is a great bonus for the first team that these guys are back and are there or thereabouts in terms of being ready to play again."
