Neil Kilkenny is expected to return to Leeds' starting line-up after missing the weekend draw at Luton due to a one-game ban, but is available and likely to replace David Prutton.
Leeds caretaker Gwyn Williams has plenty of options in midfield and may make further changes, with Seb Carole and Sebastian Sorsa, yet to make his debut, both hoping to be involved.
Williams, who has no other new injury or suspension worries, must also decide who to partner Jermaine Beckford up front.
Tresor Kandol started at Luton, but Tore Andre Flo is in the running after stepping off the substitutes' bench on Saturday.
Leeds are hoping to get back on the winning trail following the 1-0 home defeat to Doncaster and 1-1 draw at Luton.
Southend will be without defender Lewis Hunt, who serves a one-match ban after being booked for the fifth time this season during the 4-3 defeat to Hartlepool last Tuesday. Zoltan Liptak could deputise.
Lee Barnard could be handed his first start after coming off the bench to make his debut in the FA Cup defeat to Barnsley after his move from Spurs on Friday.
Fellow striker Charlie MacDonald has also returned to fitness after an ankle problem, and with Matt Harrold nearing a return from a broken nose, Gary Hooper - who started on Friday night - has been allowed to move to League Two Hereford on loan.
