Transfers - Transfer Talk: Round-up

Eurosport - Tue, 29 Jan 22:06:00 2008

Here's how Tuesday's wheeling and dealing on the transfer market panned out with Daniel Cousin failing to seal the deal that he hoped would see him move to Fulham.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Champions League - Daniel Cousin, Rangers, jumps with Barcelona's Carles Puyol - 0

Scroll down the page for today's earlier transfer gossip.

18:05 - It says here that Wrexham have tabled a five-figure bid for Chester midfielder Kevin Ellison. Right, that's... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... hold on, that's a pathetic amount of money! Although probably not, Transfer Talk accepts, if you are Wrexham.

17:55 - As anyone from deepest Kentucky will tell you, getting hooked up with a Cousin is a rewarding enterprise but it can land you in legal trouble. Fulham have found this to their cost - their attempt to become lawfully wedded to Daniel Cousin has failed because the promiscuous Frenchie has already played for Lens and Rangers this season. That, FIFA say, makes him ineligible to walk down the aisle for a third time.

17:40 - It has been in the pipeline for a while, and it may explain why Middlesbrough were so keen to offload Jonathan Woodgate. Afonso Alves - or as Transfer Talk knows him 'the walking typo' - would appear to be undergoing his medical on Teesside right now, right this second, live, as we speak. He'll move from Heerenveen for around £11m.

17:10 - Is it a deal? Well, sort of. Not a very good one though. Burnley boss Owen Coyle and Roy Keane have spent longer on the phone to day than a pair of lovestruck adolescents, striking deals for not just Andy Cole but also Stanislav Varga to spend the rest of the season at Turf Moor. Varga will then be out of contract, so his Sunderland days are o.v.e.r. over.

16:30 - DEAL! Andrew Cole. He used to "get the ball and score a goal" for Newcastle, then it was Manchester United, then Blackburn, then Fulham, Manchester City, Portsmouth, Birmingham, and most recently Sunderland (oh, hang on a minute, he didn't actually score for them) but the latest club the 36-year-old will be turning out for is Burnley. He's signed a loan deal with the Championship outfit until the end of the season. Bonza.

15:00 - Frantic final few days of transfer activity? Rubbish! And just to prove it, we can bring you news that Swindon have released Ibon Arrieta and Mauro Almeida. Exactly.

14:00 - I'm a Swedish goalkeeper, get me out of here! That's the message coming loud and clear from Manchester City keeper Andreas Isaksson, who is on the verge of signing for Turkish side Galatasaray. "I made it clear to Svennis that I want out and that I have chosen to sign with Galatasaray," Isaksson said.

13.45 - AIK's Dulee Johnson claims money (what else?) is holding up his potential loan move to Birmingham, the midfielder claiming his Swedish club are asking for a £1m fee from the Premier League club. "If AIK would only let me play one or two matches in the Premier League, they will be paid twice as much as what they are asking for now, and they know it", Johnson argued, his head swelling with each word.

13:22 - Kevin Keegan seems to be suffering from a serious case of Svenitis - he is showing interest in a whole host of players, but none are too keen to go to Newcastle. Still smarting from Woodgate's rebuttal, King Kev now has to live with the knowledge that Giles Barnes doesn't fancy his much either as Derby reject a bid for the promising midfielder.

13:15 - Not satisfied with the capture of Jonathan Woodgate, Tottenham want yet more defensive cover, especially with Pascal Chimbonda seemingly having played his last game for Spurs. And the man who looks like providing that is Rangers' right-back Alan Hutton, with a £9 million deal close to being completed. "It would look as though after the remaining formalities that he will join Spurs," says Rangers boss Walter Smith.

12:30 - DEAL! Mohamed Sissoko completes his protracted transfer from Liverpool to Juventus! And the sighs of relief in the TT office are clearly audible. The Old Lady have dug deep into their purse to get the Mali international - £8.2 million to be precise - but he will have to wait to make his debut as he's away on international duty in Ghana.

12:18 - Bad news for fans of love-ins at the City of Manchester Stadium (and indeed fans of poorly constructed puns in headlines) - Wagner Love will not be arriving this January. The Brazilian's club CSKA Moscow have put the kibosh on any move with Love saying: "At the end of last year, there was an offer form Manchester City, but the transfer did not take place because CSKA president Yevgeny Giner did not feel the offer was right for me." Has Sven lost the animal magnetism that served him so well for so long? He can't seem to attract anything these days.

12:06 - Middlesbrough are hopeful that their lawyers will be able to cut through the red tape that is currently preventing them from signing goal ace (there really is no better way to describe him) Afonso Alves from Heerenveen. Boro have an appeal scheduled for Wednesday when the Brazilian marksman will find out if he can bring his 70-odd goals-a-season form to the Premier League.

11:36 - DEAL! And another! Celtic are prolific today! Japan international Koki Mizuno joins Samaras at Celtic Park after penning a three-and-a-half year deal. "Supporters will be hoping he can make as big an impact as Shunsuke Nakamura, the current Scottish Player of the Year," the club's official website informs us.

11:34 - Arsenal youngster Abou Diaby will not be following in the footsteps of his best mate Lassana Diarra and heading towards the exit door at the Emirates. The Frenchman would rather take the lead of compatriot Mathieu Flamini and wait for his big break with the Gunners instead of looking for instant solutions and going to a smaller club. "I am very happy here," he said, and frankly, that's all we need to hear.

11:34 - DEAL! It's the first of the day as Manchester City striker Georgios Samaras joins Celtic on loan until the end of the season. The Scottish giants have the option to sign the Greek international on a permanent basis after that, but he will have a lot to prove at Parkhead after having failed to make the grade at Eastlands, other than in terms of goal celebrations.

10:32 - Why is the window always slammed and never closed gently?

10:31 - The clock is ticking... only 61 hours, 28 minutes and... 23 seconds at the time of writing remaining before that transfer window is slammed shut.

10:24 - He may be unable to stop offering his opinions on all things Milan, but Andriy Shevchenko will not be returning to the San Siro for a second stint with the Rossoneri. The Ukrainian, clearly unperturbed by the arrival of Nicolas Anelka at Stamford Bridge, has insisted he wants to stay in west London. "My life is at Chelsea now, I have served my time with Milan," he said. No more speculation over his future, then. Yeah, whatever.

10:02 - Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is also aiming high, although his bid to capture sign AIK Solna midfielder Dulee Johnson before the closing of the transfer window could be doomed. "It is not dead. There are possibilities there with Dulee - but we are running out of time," McLeish said.

09:57 - Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate finds himself in the luxurious position of having £7 million pounds to spend following the sale of Jonathan "I love my home town club" Woodgate. So where is he planning on splashing the cash? On Motherwell forward Ross McCormack, that's where.

09:53 - You thought you were surprised by Dennis Wise 's move to Newcastle? Apparently not as much as his new boss Kevin Keegan at St James' Park, who perfectly demonstrated the poor levels of communication on Tyneside by expressing his complete shock at the news.

09:51 - Why such a lack of faith in Tiago's ability to break into Claudio Ranieri's first team plans? Two words for you - Mohamed and Sissoko. The Mali international is close to completing his move to Juventus from Liverpool. "There a few details to define. We are really close to completing the affair," says Juve sporting director Alessio Secco.

09:49 - Italian giants Juventus are blaming Tottenham 's pedestrian pace at negotiating a deal for Tiago for the breakdown of the move. The Portuguese midfielder looks like he will now be staying in Turin for at least another few months of benchwarming.

09:43 - John Arne Riise may not be getting a regular game for Liverpool, but then again, who is? The Norwegian defender knows he has it good at Anfield (and we do too after having seen his leaked pay slip) and his agent says he will not be going anywhere, despite Newcastle and Aston Villa's reported interest.

09:30 - Bolton fans' cornflakes will be tasting extra sweet this morning as they take in news that Gary Megson is eyeing a move to bring Eidur Gudjohnsen back to the Reebok from Barcelona. "He's the type of player we're looking for to help us get out of our situation," Megson reckons, although TT thinks it might take a little more the signing of the former Trotters' terrace hero to stave off relegation.
