Australian Open - Stich: Nadal is just like Agassi

Eurosport - Thu, 29 Jan 01:56:00 2009

Michael Stich has compared Rafael Nadal to Andre Agassi while Virginia Wade reckons that Serena Williams's latest escape would have made Harry Houdini proud after the quarter-finals concluded at the Australian Open.

TENNIS Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal - 0

Join Annabel Croft, Virginia Wade and Michael Stich in the studio for more live coverage from Melbourne on Thursday as they report on the two women's semi-finals and the first men's semi between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick. Watch the action on British Eurosport - available in the UK on Sky channel 410 and Virgin Media channel 521.

Nadal was not quite at his best in a 6-2 7-5 7-5 victory over Gilles Simon, but former Wimbledon champion Stich reckons his play on the big points is what makes him such a top player - and similar to American Agassi.

"When it really counts Nadal is there playing the extra special shot. On every single point he gives 100 per cent and that is why I love to watch him and why I think he is very similar to Andre," Stich told Eurosport.

"Agassi always played every single point as one (on its own): he didn't care about the point he played before or the one he was going to play after.

"You could see the same from Nadal in this match - he made Simon run left and right and when you are on the wrong end of those type of points, like Simon was, you just want to put your racquet in the bag and say 'you win, I'm happy I got this far, but you take it'."

In the women's draw, Williams needed to break Svetlana Kuznetsova to stay in her last-eight encounter before coming back to seal a semi-final showdown against Elena Dementieva with a 5-7 7-5 6-1 victory.

Three-times Grand Slam winner Wade said that Serena's recovery was not a surprise as we have seen similar comebacks from the younger Williams sister in the past - partly because her opponents usually choke.

"Serena has been a Houdini," said Wade. "She has been match-point down time after time after time, although I have to say it is not usually she who wins it but rather her opponent who... dare I say the 'ch...' word?

"But you have to hand it her because when she comes back into a match she begins to play really well which shows she always wants to win - but she did lose in Sydney to Dementieva on a very hot day."

Wade also had words of praise for Vera Zvonareva who will play in a Grand Slam semi-final for the first time against Dinara Safina.

"I think Zvonareva has been playing so well in the last six months," Wade added.

"She was always such a talented player but she would implode and basically everybody thought she was washed up.

"She had some injuries too, but she has come back clear headed and she is a wonderful striker of the ball."

  1. Nadal will beat Federer because Federer struggled against Berdych and was almost out of the tournament in straight sets. Nadal was in a battle and matched every bit of power that was being thrown at him. That strong challenge will take him into the finals and will take him past Federer. Even if Nadal loses, he'll still be No. 1 baby, Nadal rocks!!!

  3. yeah like it was said, agassi did not go through players like borg and mcenroe. more importantly, for all you people who say "no way is nadal like agassi," all this writer is saying is that their tenacity on every point is similar. he's not saying theyre similar anything beyond that. anyways, a rested roger is going to wear an exhausted nadal down and win in 4 sets.

  4. Ho 92. I wont put Traci alongside Billie, Martina or even Chrissy (the last one was boring but overrated). she was just one or two hits wonder, understandably due to injuries.
I agree with you on the opponents that Aggasi battled with during his time. But Borg, Vitas and Ashe and Connors (in his twilight of brilliant years)? You better get the facts right.

  5. Fed,Nadal,Sampras they are all great players but inorder to become one of the greatest they should complete the four major grand slam tournaments. Not even sampras did! So far AAgassi is the last person to complete the 4 grand slam tournaments. Let nadal and federer complete it so that they will be included in the history of great players who completed 4 grand slam tournaments. As far I'm concern there were only 4 great players who won 4 grand slam tournaments and the last one was Andre A.

  6. No disrespect to Nadal hes an excellent player
but he is in no way shape or form even close to Andre Agassi.
This reminds me of the time Dan Quayle compared himself to Kennedy.
Completely ridiculous and totally without merit.
AA had Sampras in the earliest stages of thier careers-
which included a host of other big serve high maintenance baseliners
and even more get down and dirty serve and volleyers.
Todays players are great but who Agassi had to get through to become great
was tennis at a completely different level-
Names like-Borg, McEnroe, Lendl, Connors, Becker, Rafter, Edberg,
Vitas, Ashe, Philoppusis, Chang, Pat Cash, Noah, Henman-
    and John's baby bro-Patrick McEnroe.
    Same goes for the women.
Billie, Traci, Martina, and Chrissy set the bar extremely high-
and Sabatini, Graf, Seles, and Kournikova glamorized it.
Henin, Serena, and Venus, have dominated the tour since
but the Russians are coming up fast.

No question about it though Nadal is absolutely terrific.
Furthermore, American tennis fans are way too @#$% Blake and Roddick.
Lay it back Macs-lay it back.
    Elena Dementieva ROCKS!

  7. I love that Federer fans can't stand the fact that he is 2nd best- RAFA RULES- power, style, and sheer athleticism- plus the best mental toughness of any tennis player that has ever played the game!! Can't wait to see him be the first spaniard ever to win the Australian!

  10. Fascinating to see the battle between the two camps - like a Wimbledon match between Fed and Nadal. I like them both, Fed for his effortless and stylish game, especially the one-handed backhand and Nadal for the physicality and sheer power and control of the ball (see him play at the net or make a drop shot). The only thing I find non-appealing about Nadal's game is his grunting (almost every shot?). I think I am sensing a slow decline in the physical aspects of Fed's game. Nadal seems to be close to the peak of his game where he should stay for a couple of years barring any injury.

It is useless to compare past and present players who never played each other. I have watched some of the games of the past greats (borg, mac etc) and I got the feeling that any top 5 player from this decade would thrash them. But you never know...

  11. I apologise my weak judgement when I said Federer has no style no class no skill on slow surfaces.
Maybe I went too far and I let myself carried out by emotion. But please do not idolise more than the man himself deserves. Let's enjoy this big moment I cannot wait much longer.

  12. Federer is the most big-headed player around and maybe he has good reason but I hope Nadal destroys him like he did at the French . Boring Swiss T*$T .

  13. Uh, Fed has no style no skill on slow surface all serve? Sampras is better on slow surface?? Fed went to French Open finals more than Sampras went to the semis at French Open.

From Rocky Mountain, on Thu 29 Jan 6:27PM
  14. comment 80(fed has no class no style no skill) mmm,you say he only wins because of his serve(boom boom) Fed has only an average serve speed in today's game,Nadal serves the same pace, roddick much faster,it is "skill" where he places the ball.I you sat in a room with Nadal and told him Federer had no class no style no skill,it would be a very short conversation, because by saying these things about Fededer, belittles all Nadals efforts against Federer. Some of there battles have been ranked as some of the greatest matches of all time, and it takes two men with large amounts of skill to accomplish this.Trying to belittle federer only serves to tarnish the achievements of your own man. They are both worthy of the term great player.Blind love and devotion to one of them whilst trashing the other is a farce,we are lucky to have them both.

  15. ha,ha,ha,guys listen out and learn. The best ever male tennis player is surely Rod Laver who did not have the modern raquet or the latest design of tennis balls. In his era and surely his time, he was peerless. Had he been able to use the modern raquet and surely the modern courts, every other player would be second best!

  16. Everyone is talking about Fed and Nadal and to be fair they are both great players. Maybe they are the best ever, maybe there not who has the right to say this when alot has changed in the game.
I know Murray has yet to win a gran slam but i think it is only a matter of time before he does and on his day he is by far as good to compete with both them players and even beat them as he has already shown in his career.

    From ryanjo88, on Thu 29 Jan 5:09PM
  17. And Justice for All: your comment "Fed has no class no style no skill when it comes to slower surfaces. So all the GSlams he's got like Sampras are on fast surfaces" reflects either your ignorance about the sport or some irrational bias against Federer or for Nadal. Federer's record of 23-4 (2005-08) at the French Open is second only to Nadal's record of 28-0 during the same period. He made it the finals at Roland Garros three consecutive years. The fact that he lost to Nadal -- probably the best clay player ever-- doesn't mean Fed has "no skill" on that surface. What an absurd remark.

From geyserpeaks, on Thu 29 Jan 4:49PM
  18. About comparisons and great players...I think no-one can debate this without taking into account the number of slams and toughness of different players. Sure Federer is the best of his time but probably he would not be such a great player in Sampras time. Sampras was awesome outstanding and unbelievable watching. Some players achieve more than others but that does not mean to be the best just a measure. In my view Nadal could be catalogued near great given his age and trajectory. He outplays Federer whenever and wherever he has the right frame of mind. Without him today tennis would be very boring watching only Federer winning all the time with his serve bom boom boom. Fed has no class no style no skill when it comes to slower surfaces. So all the GSlams he's got like Sampras are on fast surfaces. So Nadal once he achieves the other elluding GS on fast surfaces like Agassi did in his day then Nadal will be considered a great player in all round surfaces and he is much closer than Federer in that respect. So far I am happy to see a Spaniard kicking Fed's bum around to frustrate his fans egos. Good luck to the winner in the final of the Australian Open.
Hopefully a gladiatorial Spaniard called Maximus Number One.
