Australian Open - Stich: Nadal is just like Agassi

Eurosport - Thu, 29 Jan 01:56:00 2009

Michael Stich has compared Rafael Nadal to Andre Agassi while Virginia Wade reckons that Serena Williams's latest escape would have made Harry Houdini proud after the quarter-finals concluded at the Australian Open.

TENNIS Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal - 0

Join Annabel Croft, Virginia Wade and Michael Stich in the studio for more live coverage from Melbourne on Thursday as they report on the two women's semi-finals and the first men's semi between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick. Watch the action on British Eurosport - available in the UK on Sky channel 410 and Virgin Media channel 521.

Nadal was not quite at his best in a 6-2 7-5 7-5 victory over Gilles Simon, but former Wimbledon champion Stich reckons his play on the big points is what makes him such a top player - and similar to American Agassi.

"When it really counts Nadal is there playing the extra special shot. On every single point he gives 100 per cent and that is why I love to watch him and why I think he is very similar to Andre," Stich told Eurosport.

"Agassi always played every single point as one (on its own): he didn't care about the point he played before or the one he was going to play after.

"You could see the same from Nadal in this match - he made Simon run left and right and when you are on the wrong end of those type of points, like Simon was, you just want to put your racquet in the bag and say 'you win, I'm happy I got this far, but you take it'."

In the women's draw, Williams needed to break Svetlana Kuznetsova to stay in her last-eight encounter before coming back to seal a semi-final showdown against Elena Dementieva with a 5-7 7-5 6-1 victory.

Three-times Grand Slam winner Wade said that Serena's recovery was not a surprise as we have seen similar comebacks from the younger Williams sister in the past - partly because her opponents usually choke.

"Serena has been a Houdini," said Wade. "She has been match-point down time after time after time, although I have to say it is not usually she who wins it but rather her opponent who... dare I say the 'ch...' word?

"But you have to hand it her because when she comes back into a match she begins to play really well which shows she always wants to win - but she did lose in Sydney to Dementieva on a very hot day."

Wade also had words of praise for Vera Zvonareva who will play in a Grand Slam semi-final for the first time against Dinara Safina.

"I think Zvonareva has been playing so well in the last six months," Wade added.

"She was always such a talented player but she would implode and basically everybody thought she was washed up.

"She had some injuries too, but she has come back clear headed and she is a wonderful striker of the ball."

  2. Also if Rafa takes this AO, some will consider him more likely to achieve the career GS than the Fed. But if Roger's Roland Garros rest plan works (he'll play far fewer clay warm-ups this year), all Rafa fans will be silenced for sure. First, Rafa, pls. get past Verdasco. Tennis fans will be grateful for the fantastic final you and Roger will then be sure to create.

  3. In response to jc3312, what the heck is "tric"? Anyway we get the gist of what you're trying to say. Video is just as fallible as Hawkeye due to frame rates, distortions caused by the convex nature of the lens, and camera perspective, not to mention the fact that if play had to be stopped everytime there was a challenge for a video review, like the NFL, then matches would take much longer than they already do and it would break the rhythm of the players. Hawkeye is accurate to 3/100ths of an inch according to it's manufacturer, so it's unlikely that it it less accurate than a video replay, especially since video is only able to capture a limited number of views depending upon where the cameras are placed. In any case, there are bad calls in tennis with or without Hawkeye, it's up to the player to overcome those.

  4. Mats made an interesting point after the Nadal-Simone match: Simone's exceptional backhand on those Nadal high-kicking returns is what gave Rafa the most trouble in this match. According to Wilander, neither Verdasco nor Federer has such a weapon. I think if Rafa gets past the Spanish semi he will pepper Rog's backhand much more than Roddick did. Also, if Rafa wins the final, imagine how much that will get into Roger's head with Roland Garros around the corner!

  13. Michael tends to stich to his own ideas - can only see a Fed v Rafa final, likewise Dinara v Serena. These are really the cream of the cream, very strong physically, and v importantly, mentally.

  14. i live in Australia, and fortunately do not have to listen to Stitch's commentary. i heard the guy was good in his day, but after some of his articles, i don't agree with his opinions and i don't like him. now, Jim Courier is a great commentator, and thankfully in Australia we get to listen to him and Todd Woodbridge. Courier has a sense of humour as well as a knowledge of the game.

  17. * Hawk eye is the possibility of tric !*
Everybody trust hawk eye absolutely .
But I doubt hawk eye is the possibility of tric.
I scanned replay video again and again with slow speed motion at the time of challenge call and compared with hawk eye.
As a result , I found hawk eye is the possibility of tric .
Broadcast must show replay video near the line with slow speed at the time of challenge call.
Replay video near the line with slow speed is better than Hawk eye

  18. N0 48 webbski, well said ,Stich did have a great game,in the days when grass courts were fast and the balls faster. He is a grandslam champion, unlike any of the bloggers here. His opinion carries some weight, and he mixed it with the best of his generation. He may not be right all the time, few of us are,but he has earned the right to give an opinion.
