Italian Carolina Kostner won ladies’ gold for the fourth time at the ISU European Figure Skating Championships in Sheffield.
Kostner, the European champion in 2007, 2008 and 2010, put herself in the perfect position to win a fourth career title after posting a score of 63.22 from her short program on Friday.
That gave her a slender lead over Finland’s Kiira Korpi, who was awarded 61.80, and she ensured that no-one was going to take gold away from her this time having had to settle for silver last year.
Kostner, who has two European silvers and a bronze to her name, scored 120.33 for her free skate for an overall winning total of 183.55 ahead of Korpi – second after the short program.
Korpi was nowhere near challenging Kostner as she could only muster an overall score of 166.94 however the battle for silver was far tighter – the Finnish skater claiming it by just over a point.
Georgia’s Elene Gedevanishvili settled for bronze with a score of 165.93 moving up a place from fourth following the short program with Russian Polina Korobeynikova doing the same from as low as 12th for fourth.
But there was frustration for home hope Jenna McCorkell as she dropped from 16th to 18th with a combined total of 125.41 – her worst-ever finish from seven European Championship appearances.

@Arnie - Agreed, but she is still a joy to watch!
she's not going to win world championship and winter olympics!
I knew as soon as the trailer for the Australian Open was shown that the rest of the schedules were going to be disrupted again. We live in country where the winter sport fans are short changed,we don't get live events here and some of us will never get to the locations involved due to the cost. This year the European Figure Skating Champs were in Sheffield, they sold out so the rest of us had to rely on tv.Why oh why does everything get pushed aside for tennis?-we see it everyday during the Wimbledon fortnight. Not only that ,i see that Biathlon is missing, another major event missed, along with Cross Country Ski races.Come on Eurosport,be more loyal to us.The BBC have little time for wintersports and we fans are getting fed up.
Caro as elegant as always ;)
