Serie A - Fiorentina win Tuscan derby
Siena, who have never beaten their local rivals in the top flight, were up against it almost from the get-go and fell behind in the third minute thanks to a brilliant individual goal by Stevan Jovetic, who cut in from the left wing before unleashing a shot into the corner of the net past Zelijko Pegolo's despairing dive.
Despite the early setback, Siena enjoyed more than the lion's share of possession but it was still the home side who looked more likely to add to their lead. Andrea Lazzari fired a shot just wide from the edge of the box before Pegolo did well to prevent Valon Behrami beating him to the ball from Amauri's through ball.
Siena threatened sporadically down the flanks, Mattia Destro flashing a dangerous ball across the face of goal. But minutes before the break, Fiorentina should have gone further ahead. Mattia Cassani found space down the right and Jovetic flicked his cross into the path of Lazzari whose point blank header was brilliantly saved by Pegolo. From the resultant play, Amauri then saw his overhead kick saved by a sprawling pegolo and out for a corner.
Fiorentina started the second half with wave after wave of attacks and Siena had Pegolo to thank for keeping them in it, first saving brilliantly from Lazzari's header before turning Amauri's overhead around the post.Minutes later, he was at it again, diving to his right to keep out another Amauri header.
But the goal was coming and Natali eventually broke Pegolo's resistance, heading Riccardo Montolivio's cross into the net. It should have been plain sailing but for a needless handball from Matija Nastasic in the box. Emanuele Calaio calmly converted to set up a tense finale but Fiorentina held firm.
