Banned Peru stars set to appeal

Sat 29 Mar, 12:45 PM

The lawyer of banned Peru striker Andres Mendoza has revealed the player intends to appeal against his 18-month suspension.Chelsea's Claudio Pizarro, PSV Eindhoven's Jefferson Farfan and Almeria Santiago Acasiete were also banned by the Peru FA Justice Committee after they held a party following the 1-1 draw against Brazil in a World Cup qualifier in November.

The governing body backdated the suspension to the time of the offence, meaning the players could return in May 2009, however Mendoza's lawyer Jose Moreno revealed his player intended to appeal the ban.

"We are going to appeal in the next few days," he told Ovacion radio station.

"I phoned him to tell him of their (Peruvian football association's) decision. He doesn't agree with it. Andres is demanding proof that he was involved because he doesn't think they have any."

Farfan may also appeal the decision after his representative Enrique Pardo revealed he was in discussions with the PSV striker about what course of action he would like to take.

Pardo said: "The sanction was excessive. My defendant only committed a little mistake in his behaviour. We still are thinking about the future measures."

Acasiete, meanwhile, has warned he will find it "very difficult" to return to the national squad.

"I think that after this I am not going to return to play with the national squad due the decision the board had taken," Acasiete told Panamericana television network

"I don't know what to say, it is a pity not to be in the team.

"We are facing the (World Cup) qualifiers and new players will have to appear to replace the banned ones. For that reason I will have to forget about the squad."

The players received backing from Catania defender Juan Vargas who agreed the punishment handed down was "excessive".

"Things are bad there (in Lima). I think that the punishment is excessive. I want to tell my team-mates that we support them, that this situation hurts us all and that we will keep united. There names has been stained," he told Ovacion.

"In my opinion the allegations are pure speculation. Why don't they show the video tapes?

"This punishment is useful only to destabilise the group. Everything is being done in the wrong way. Now, I am afraid to play with the national squad."
