Hamburg let Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich off the hook on Saturday as the top two both struggled to 1-1 draws against struggling teams. In fact, both came within 10 minutes of losing to Arminia Bielefeld and Nurnberg respectively, before snatching late equalisers.
Hosts Nurnberg went ahead against the league leaders two minutes before the break through Zvjezdan Misimovic, but were pegged back by Germany striker Lukas Podolski's 81st-minute strike.
In Hamburg, Bielefeld took advantage of David Jarolim's 66th-minute red card to go ahead through Markus Bollmann (72).
But Paolo Guerrero levelled eight minutes from time and the sides were evened up three minutes later when Hamburg substitute Jorg Bohme was dismissed - just seven minutes after coming on.
Bayern remain seven points ahead of Hamburg and a further two ahead of Schalke who also failed to take advantage - they drew 0-0 at Karlsruhe.
And defeats for Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen meant none of the top five could claim a victory.
Leverkusen slipped to a 2-0 home defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt, who were set on their way by Stefan Kiessling's own goal after 24 minutes.
Leverkusen could not find an equaliser and Frankfurt moved to within two points of their opponents when 85th-minute substitute Vangelis Mantzios confirmed the win in the final minute.
Two first-half goals did for Werder Bremen, who lost 2-1 at home Duisburg - a win which took the strugglers off the bottom and out of the relegation zone.
Ivica Grlic (32) and Manasseh Ishiaku 10 minutes later shocked the hosts, who replied through Brazil star Diego two minutes before the hour mark.
That result means Energie Cottbus, who face Hertha Berlin on Sunday, Nurnberg and Bielefeld now make up the bottom three.
In Saturday's other game, Borussia Dortmund came from 2-0 and 3-2 down to claim a 3-3 draw at Bochum.
Christoph Dabrowski and Benjamin Auer both scored within the first 10 minutes, before strikes from Sebastian Kehl (37) and Mladen Petric (39) levelled things up.
Auer restored his side's advantage three minutes before the break, but Dortmund were not to be denied a point thanks to Tinga (65).
Sunday's other game sees Stuttgart travel to Hannover.
On Friday, Jacek Krzynowek's injury-time strike gave Wolfsburg a 1-0 win at Hansa Rostock.
