Arthur Plots Guzman Downfall

Sat 29 Mar, 12:14 AM

Alex Arthur claims rival Joan Guzman literally will not know what has hit him when he steps into the ring to contest the WBO super-featherweight title.

The 29-year-old Scot faces Guzman on May 3 at Edinburgh's Meadowbank Arena hoping to spring a surprise and upset the favourite.

Guzman, 31, from the Dominican Republic, has a 100% record of 28 wins from as many fights - 17 by way of knockout.

And although Arthur respects his opponent, he believes he has enough in his armoury to take the title.

He said: "The way I see it, he's never fought a real top-class European opponent before. And that is a whole different ball game from the guys he's fought.

"I'd say his past opponents are fairly one-dimensional and European fighters can be very confusing to the likes of Guzman and top-class Americans because of the way we fight."

The Scot also suspects that Guzman's reputation is not warranted, especially his standing in America, and he is keen to expose his flaws.

But when asked if his opponent could perhaps underestimate him, he quickly responded: "I think he is probably a bit smarter than that.

"When he looks at my record and sees that I've won gold, silver and bronze medals all over the world as an amateur, I've had a successful professional career and I've beaten some different styles of opponents.

"He is 31 and he's not really fought anyone. But why is he not in with Manny Pacquiao, Juan Marquez or Marco Antonio Barrera?

"Why do HBO not want to screen his fights against these guys? Nobody wants to know about him, or so it seems to me."

Arthur is in no doubt he will be in the best shape of his life by the time Guzman arrives in the capital.

He said: "There's no doubt about it that. I'm already about 10 or 12lbs lighter. It's something that had to be done as I got a scare against Steve Foster.

"No disrespect to Steve but he really should not have lasted any more than three or four rounds with me.

"I've learned that you cannot take anything lightly."
